‘You’re Not a Dead Man Walking’ – Yeni Kuti Criticises Artists Comparing Themselves to Fela

Nigerian media personality Yeni Kuti has taken aim at modern artistes who compare their success or influence to that of her late father, Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, urging them to show greater respect for his legacy.

Her comments came during an interview on Arise TV shortly after she joined other members of the Kuti family to receive Fela’s Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2026 Grammy Awards.

Yeni emphasized that the continued global recognition Fela receives decades after his passing demonstrates the depth of his cultural and musical impact, noting that his relevance has endured long beyond his lifetime.

She argued that frequent comparisons between contemporary stars and the Afrobeat legend misunderstand what true legacy represents, stressing that Fela’s contributions should be honoured rather than diminished through competitive debates.

The discussion follows recent controversy sparked when singer Wizkid claimed he was “bigger” than Fela while responding to criticism from Fela’s son, Seun Kuti, and his supporters.

Reacting to such statements, Yeni advised present-day musicians to measure themselves against their contemporaries instead of placing themselves side by side with historic figures whose influence has already been cemented.

According to her, attempting to equate current success with Fela’s achievements ignores the unique era, struggles, and cultural significance that defined his career.

She maintained that legends deserve recognition for their role in shaping the industry and should not be drawn into rivalry narratives with artists still building their journeys.

Yeni added that the fact people still discuss Fela many years after his death is itself proof of the magnitude of his legacy, reinforcing her call for respect.

Her remarks have since sparked renewed debate about how modern entertainers position themselves in relation to past icons, as well as broader conversations about honouring pioneers who helped shape African music history.
