Zamfara Assembly Shaken as Six PDP Lawmakers Defect to APC

The political landscape of the Zamfara State House of Assembly has shifted following the defection of six lawmakers from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The legislators, who secured their seats under the PDP banner, officially declared their move to the APC, a development widely viewed as part of the ruling party’s strategy to strengthen its dominance within the state legislature.

Among the defectors are Muktar Nasir Kaura (Kaura North), Nasiru Abdullahi Maru (Maru North), and Amiru Ahmad Keta (Tsafe West). Also joining the APC are Bashar Aliyu Gummi (Gummi I), Barrister Bashir Abubakar Masama (Bukkuyum North), and Bashir Bello (Bungudu West).

This wave of defections has further tilted the numerical balance in favour of the APC, reinforcing its growing control of legislative activities in the state.

Political analysts note that the development reflects the deepening internal challenges within the PDP in Zamfara, where persistent disagreements and defections have continued to weaken the party’s structure.

In contrast, the APC has continued to gain momentum, capitalising on the growing discontent within the opposition to expand its presence in the assembly.

A similar situation is unfolding in Rivers State, where the PDP is also grappling with mass defections. Reports indicate that the party has been reduced to just two members in the Rivers State caucus of the House of Representatives after six lawmakers recently switched allegiance to the APC.

Those who defected include Robinson Dekor, Solomon Bob, Cyril Hart, Victor Obuzor, Blessing Amadi, and Felix Nwaeke, leaving only House Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda and Kelechi Nwogu as PDP representatives from the state.

While announcing the defections during plenary, Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, attributed the lawmakers’ decision to unresolved internal disputes and factional divisions within the PDP.

The defecting lawmakers also cited prolonged internal crises as the reason for their exit, stating that the instability within the party had hindered their political ambitions. They confirmed their decision to align with President Bola Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda” under the APC platform.

The latest exits have significantly diminished the PDP’s influence in Rivers State, where the party once held 12 seats in the House of Representatives before the recent string of defections.

Only a week earlier, three other PDP lawmakers from the state—Boniface Emerengwa, Awaji-Inombek Abiante, and Boma Goodhead—also defected to the APC, further compounding the party’s crisis.

With these developments, the PDP’s representation from Rivers State now stands at just two lawmakers, underscoring the mounting challenges facing the opposition party across key states.
