Political tensions have surfaced within the Peoples Democratic Party in Zamfara State following the defection of a former party chairman to the All Progressives Congress.
The Chairman of Kaura-Namoda Local Government Area, Munnir Haidara, alleged that the former PDP state chairman, Sadiq Chiroma, had already begun undermining the party long before he officially switched allegiance.
Haidara made the accusations in a public statement issued shortly after news of Chiroma’s defection became widely known. According to him, certain actions by the former party leader had raised questions about his loyalty even before the recent political development.
Allegations of Secret Contacts With Rival Party
The local government chairman claimed that Chiroma had been seen interacting privately with influential figures from the APC during a critical political period in the state.
He described such meetings as inappropriate for a serving party official, suggesting that the alleged engagements violated the internal rules and expectations governing party leadership.
According to Haidara, these interactions created suspicion among party members and contributed to concerns about the integrity of PDP strategies during political contests in the state.
Claims of Internal Strategy Leak
Beyond the alleged meetings, Haidara also accused the former chairman of disclosing confidential plans that were meant to remain within the party’s leadership structure.
He further suggested that these actions negatively affected the party’s performance during a recent legislative bye-election, arguing that the PDP’s electoral prospects may have been weakened by internal sabotage.
Another claim raised by Haidara linked Chiroma to the defection of Mohammed Lawal Kurya Madaro, a former candidate of the party in the state assembly race.
Continued Support for Zamfara Governor
Despite the internal controversy, Haidara emphasized that PDP supporters in Kaura-Namoda remain committed to the administration of Dauda Lawal.
He urged residents of the area to continue backing government programmes, describing the governor’s initiatives as development-focused and beneficial to the local population.
The chairman also maintained that the PDP structure within the local government remains strong and united despite the recent departure of a former party leader.
Message to the Former Chairman
Although critical of Chiroma’s actions, Haidara concluded by wishing him success in his new political home. At the same time, he warned that political decisions often come with consequences, suggesting that the former chairman would eventually face the outcomes of his choices.
Commentary and Political Analysis
Party defections remain a recurring feature of Nigeria’s political landscape, particularly in states where political competition is intense. Moves from one major party to another often trigger accusations of betrayal or strategic manoeuvring.
Analysts note that such developments frequently reveal deeper internal tensions within party structures, especially when high-ranking officials are involved.
In Zamfara, the PDP’s response suggests an attempt to reassure supporters that the party remains stable despite the defection. However, political observers say the real impact of such departures often becomes clearer during subsequent elections, when party loyalty and grassroots support are put to the test.
