Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has declined to disclose who will emerge as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election, stating that the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) is still consulting widely before reaching a final decision.

The governor made the remarks after a private meeting with Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, at the Government House in Bauchi, where both leaders discussed governance and political developments ahead of the next general election.

Makinde Says Decision Will Come After Internal Consultations

When asked about the identity of the person likely to occupy the vice-presidential position on the party’s ticket, Makinde explained that discussions were still ongoing within the party.

He noted that the selection process had not been concluded, urging Nigerians to be patient until the party officially completes all necessary consultations.

Rather than revealing any names, the governor indicated that the public would know the party’s final candidates once the official nomination details are submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

According to Gossip News Now, Makinde emphasized that there is still sufficient time for consultations before the electoral timetable reaches that stage.

Bala Mohammed Describes Meeting as Part of Peer Learning

Speaking after the meeting, Bala Mohammed explained that the visit formed part of ongoing engagements among state governors aimed at exchanging ideas and improving governance.

He stressed that collaboration between leaders at both the state and national levels remains essential for addressing common challenges and identifying successful policies that can be replicated elsewhere.

The Bauchi governor added that continuous interaction among governors promotes better decision-making and enables states to benefit from one another’s experiences.

APM Leadership Optimistic Ahead of 2027

Beyond governance discussions, Bala Mohammed expressed confidence in the future of the Allied Peoples Movement, saying the party is gradually strengthening its position within Nigeria’s political landscape.

He described the APM as an emerging opposition platform that is working to provide credible alternatives and constructive engagement in national politics as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.

The governor suggested that the party’s continued expansion could make it a more influential force in the country’s democratic process.

Focus Remains on Building Party Consensus

While speculation continues over the eventual vice-presidential nominee, Makinde made it clear that internal unity and broad consultations remain priorities for the party.

He indicated that the leadership intends to complete the selection process carefully before making any official announcements, ensuring that every decision reflects the outcome of discussions within the party.

Commentary and Analysis

The refusal by Seyi Makinde to announce a running mate highlights the strategic approach political parties often adopt before major elections. Delaying such decisions allows room for negotiations, coalition-building and regional considerations that could influence electoral strength.

As preparations for the 2027 presidential election gradually intensify, political observers are expected to monitor developments within the APM and other opposition parties to see how candidate selections, alliances and internal consultations shape the contest ahead.
