Former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme, Usman Yusuf>, has alleged that the exit of key opposition figures from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) was influenced by the political dominance of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar within the coalition.
Speaking during an interview on Trust TV, Yusuf argued that both Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso could not match Atiku’s political weight inside the party structure.
ADC Crisis Linked to Internal Power Struggle
Yusuf suggested that the disagreement inside the ADC was less about ideology and more about influence and control ahead of the 2027 presidential race.
According to him, the two former presidential candidates failed to make significant contributions to the growth of the party during their involvement with the platform.
Gossip News Now reports that Yusuf criticized what he described as impatience among opposition politicians, insisting that democratic procedures should be respected instead of abandoning political negotiations midway.
Yusuf Questions Political Contributions
During the interview, Yusuf openly questioned the value Kwankwaso and Obi added to the ADC arrangement before distancing themselves from the coalition discussions.
He maintained that mature politicians should remain committed to established internal processes rather than withdrawing because of disagreements over influence or positioning.
In a reworked remark during the interview, Yusuf implied that stronger political figures naturally dominate coalition talks, adding that those unwilling to follow due process often choose to walk away instead of staying to negotiate.
Tinubu Administration Accused of Political Interference
The former NHIS boss also accused the Federal Government of attempting to weaken opposition politics through legal and institutional pressure.
He criticized ongoing legal disputes surrounding political parties and questioned why federal authorities would become deeply involved in opposition-related court matters.
Yusuf argued that such developments could create concerns about democratic fairness as preparations for the 2027 elections gradually intensify.
Strong Warning Directed at Tinubu
The outspoken commentator also turned his attention to Bola Ahmed Tinubu, claiming public frustration with the current administration is growing.
Referring to the President’s popular political slogan, Yusuf predicted that the same movement used to secure victory in 2023 could eventually work against him during the next election cycle.
He further claimed that many Nigerians are unhappy with the current economic and political direction of the country.
No Consensus Candidate Yet — Yusuf
Despite speculation surrounding opposition alliances, Yusuf insisted that no official candidate has emerged within the ADC ahead of 2027.
He stressed that discussions are still ongoing and warned against premature assumptions regarding who may eventually secure any presidential ticket.
The former NHIS chief also argued that political observers should allow internal consultations and negotiations to conclude naturally before drawing conclusions about the opposition coalition.
Commentary and Analysis
Yusuf’s remarks reflect the increasing tension already building ahead of the 2027 elections, especially among opposition figures attempting to form alliances capable of challenging the ruling APC.
The comments also highlight the difficulty of uniting influential political heavyweights under one platform, particularly when presidential ambitions and regional interests collide.
Political analysts believe the opposition’s biggest challenge may not only be defeating the ruling party, but also managing internal rivalries among leaders with strong individual support bases.
With figures like Atiku, Obi, and Kwankwaso all commanding loyal followings across different regions, coalition talks could become more complicated as election season approaches.
