Nigeria’s anti-narcotics agency has intensified its crackdown on illicit drug trafficking, recording a series of significant interceptions and arrests in different parts of the country, including the discovery of narcotics hidden inside imported water purification equipment.
The latest operation by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) exposed an attempt to smuggle prohibited substances into Nigeria through a courier service in Lagos State. Investigators uncovered quantities of ketamine and MDMA (ecstasy) that had been concealed within water purifier machines shipped from the Netherlands.
Concealed Drugs Discovered in Imported Equipment
According to information released by the agency, traffickers allegedly designed the concealment method to evade routine screening procedures. However, NDLEA operatives successfully identified the suspicious cargo and recovered the narcotics before they could enter circulation.
The seizure represents another example of the increasingly sophisticated methods being employed by drug syndicates attempting to move illegal substances across international borders.
Kaduna Operation Leads to Massive Drug Recovery
In a separate operation carried out in Kaduna State, NDLEA officers arrested Musa Sunday, Mercy Sunday, and Salomi Ezekiel following the recovery of a large quantity of skunk from a residential property.
Authorities reported that approximately 100 jumbo bags of the substance were discovered during the raid, with the total weight exceeding one thousand kilograms.
The agency described the operation as part of ongoing efforts to dismantle networks involved in the storage and distribution of illegal drugs across the country.
Ammunition Seized During Highway Patrol
Another security breakthrough occurred along the Abuja-Kaduna Highway, where operatives intercepted a suspect identified as Sunusi Musa during a routine patrol operation.
During the search, officers reportedly recovered hundreds of rounds of military-grade ammunition allegedly being transported toward Katsina State.
Gossip News Now reports that the suspect and the recovered ammunition were subsequently transferred to the appropriate security authorities for further investigation and necessary action.
Warehouse Raid in Niger State Yields Major Discovery
Acting on intelligence reports, NDLEA personnel also carried out an operation in Bosso Local Government Area of Niger State, where a warehouse believed to be connected to drug activities was raided.
The search resulted in the recovery of hundreds of kilograms of skunk. Investigators later arrested Godwin Zakka in connection with the seized substances.
Authorities indicated that inquiries remain ongoing as they seek to identify additional individuals who may be linked to the operation.
Enugu Patrol Team Intercepts Drug Consignment
In Enugu State, a commercial vehicle travelling along the Onitsha-Enugu Expressway attracted the attention of NDLEA officers during a patrol exercise.
A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of thousands of tramadol tablets alongside quantities of pentazocine and bromazepam. The agency subsequently arrested James Maigari Wisdom as part of the investigation.
Officials stated that the interception prevented the substances from reaching their intended destination.
Public Awareness Campaign Continues Nationwide
Beyond enforcement activities, the NDLEA said it remains committed to reducing drug abuse through public education initiatives under its War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) programme.
Recent sensitisation exercises were conducted across educational institutions, religious centres and community locations in states including Cross River, Taraba, Lagos, and Anambra.
The campaign aims to discourage substance abuse while encouraging greater public awareness of the dangers associated with illegal drug use and trafficking.
Marwa Commends Officers for Recent Successes
Reacting to the latest operations, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, praised personnel involved in the successful arrests and seizures.
He acknowledged the efforts of officers from the Kaduna, Niger, and Enugu commands, as well as members of the agency’s operational units, for sustaining pressure on drug trafficking networks.
The NDLEA boss also urged personnel nationwide to remain committed to both enforcement and public education efforts as the agency continues its fight against illicit substances.
Analysis: NDLEA Expands Pressure on Drug Networks
The latest series of interceptions highlights the NDLEA’s increasing focus on disrupting both local and international drug supply chains. From concealed imports arriving from overseas to large-scale domestic storage facilities, the operations demonstrate the agency’s strategy of targeting every stage of the trafficking process.
Equally important is the continued expansion of awareness campaigns aimed at reducing demand. By combining enforcement with public education, the NDLEA appears determined to address both the supply and consumption sides of Nigeria’s drug challenge, a strategy many observers believe is essential for achieving long-term results.
