Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has challenged young Nigerians to redefine leadership as a commitment to public service rather than a tool for personal advancement.

Speaking during the 36th Convocation Ceremony of the University of Port Harcourt, the former Rivers State governor stressed that the future of Nigeria depends largely on leaders who place national interest above individual ambition.

According to Wike, effective leadership should focus on improving the lives of citizens and strengthening institutions rather than pursuing personal recognition or benefits.

Wike Warns Against Self-Interest in Public Office

Addressing graduating students, the FCT minister expressed concern over issues such as corruption, abuse of authority and excessive self-interest, which he said have contributed to weakening public institutions and slowing national progress.

He encouraged the new graduates to build careers anchored on integrity, accountability and courage, emphasizing that leadership should be measured by the value it creates for society.

Rather than viewing public office as an opportunity for personal gain, Nyesom Wike argued that leaders should constantly evaluate how their decisions benefit the people they serve and the legacy they leave behind.
