Senator Adams Oshiomhole, representing Edo North Senatorial District, has faulted Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde over his appeal for international bodies to investigate the circumstances surrounding the abduction and rescue of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area.

The former Edo State governor argued that involving the United Nations (UN) and other international organisations in the matter undermines Nigeria’s sovereignty and overlooks the efforts made by the country’s security agencies.

According to Gossip News Now, Oshiomhole made the remarks during Tuesday’s Senate plenary while reacting to the governor’s call for an independent international probe into the incident.

Senator Rejects Call for Foreign Investigation

Addressing fellow lawmakers, Adams Oshiomhole maintained that Nigeria possesses the institutions and capacity required to investigate security-related matters without external intervention.

He described the proposal to invite the UN into the issue as inappropriate, insisting that such a move sends the wrong message about the country’s ability to handle its internal affairs.

The senator argued that national leaders should demonstrate confidence in domestic institutions rather than seeking foreign involvement in sensitive security matters.

Oshiomhole Accuses Makinde of Politicising the Incident

The lawmaker further alleged that Governor Seyi Makinde’s position reflected excessive partisan politics.

In his view, the governor’s comments failed to acknowledge the work carried out by security agencies and those involved in the rescue operation.

Expressing his disappointment, Oshiomhole suggested that public officials should avoid statements capable of diminishing the sacrifices made by personnel responsible for securing the release of the victims.

Tinubu’s Administration Deserves Recognition, Senator Says

While defending the Federal Government’s handling of the incident, Oshiomhole credited the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the nation’s security operatives for achieving the rescue without reportedly paying ransom.

He argued that successful rescue missions should be recognised as evidence of ongoing efforts to improve Nigeria’s security response rather than becoming subjects of political controversy.

According to the senator, the outcome reflected positively on the leadership of the Commander-in-Chief and the coordinated work of security agencies.

Debate Highlights Differing Views on Security Accountability

The disagreement follows Governor Makinde’s earlier appeal for international organisations, including the United Nations, to examine the circumstances surrounding both the kidnapping and eventual rescue of the schoolchildren and their teachers.

While supporters of such calls argue that independent investigations can strengthen transparency and accountability, Oshiomhole insisted that Nigeria remains fully capable of addressing such issues through its own institutions.

Analysis

The exchange between Adams Oshiomhole and Seyi Makinde reflects broader political differences over how major security incidents should be handled and evaluated. While some leaders advocate greater external scrutiny in sensitive cases, others believe that relying on international intervention could weaken public confidence in Nigeria’s institutions. The debate also underscores the growing political significance of security achievements as preparations for future electoral contests continue.
