Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, has confirmed that he will formally defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) next week, ending weeks of speculation about his political direction.

Speaking on Tuesday during a joint stakeholders’ meeting of PDP and APC leaders at the Banquet Hall of TY Danjuma House in Jalingo, Kefas said his decision is driven by a desire to promote unity, peace, and development in the state.

Addressing the gathering, the governor said:
“There has been a rumour, and I have also been hearing it. Sometimes when a rumour continues to spread, it becomes something worth considering. I am working to ensure that this rumour becomes a reality.”

Kefas stated that he will make an official declaration in a matter of days, emphasizing that his move is aimed at consolidating political stability in Taraba.

“By the grace of God, in a few days after next week, you will hear from me. Let us forgive one another and come together for the progress of our state. Once I see unity and cooperation among us, I will give the state what it deserves,” he added.

Describing the moment as “historic,” Kefas said Taraba must now speak with one political voice to strengthen its developmental prospects.

He also commended APC leaders for sustaining the party in the state, noting that it has become a viable platform for his next chapter in public service.

APC Leaders Applaud Kefas’ Move

Top APC figures attended the meeting, including Minister of State for Regional Development Uba Maigari, former Governor Jolly Nyame, APC North-East Vice Chairman Dr. Mustapha Salihu, Deputy National Women Leader Hajia Zainab Ibrahim, and Taraba APC Chairman Barr. Ibrahim El-Sudi.

Salihu expressed confidence that Kefas’ defection would strengthen Taraba’s relationship with the federal government, positioning the state for enhanced support and development opportunities.

“If this move becomes a reality, Taraba will no longer receive just peanuts from the federal government,” he said.

Hajia Zainab Ibrahim described the expected defection as a defining moment, noting that the state would benefit more from aligning with the ruling party.

Taraba APC Chairman, Barr. Ibrahim El-Sudi, welcomed the development, calling it a major breakthrough for the state.

“We have stayed with this party for 13 years. Seeing Taraba united and progressing without division will be a great joy,” he said.
