Rising British-Nigerian heavyweight Moses Itauma has been honoured as the Breakthrough Athlete of the Year at the 2025 British Sports Awards, capping off an exceptional year for the young fighter.

At just 20 years old, Itauma has rapidly emerged as one of the most promising talents in world boxing. He boasts a perfect professional record of 13 wins, 11 by knockout, highlighted by a stunning first-round victory over Dillian Whyte in Saudi Arabia this past August. The decisive win sent shockwaves through the heavyweight division, firmly establishing him as a future contender for a world title.

Promoter Frank Warren celebrated the accolade on social media, posting on Facebook: “Congratulations to Moses Itauma on receiving the Breakthrough Athlete of the Year award. SJA British Sports Awards 2025.”

Representing Queensberry Promotions, Itauma is scheduled to return to the ring on January 24, facing American heavyweight Jermaine Franklin at Manchester’s Co-op Live Arena. Franklin, who has gone the distance with both Anthony Joshua and Dillian Whyte and has never been knocked out in 26 professional bouts, presents one of Itauma’s toughest challenges yet.

The up-and-coming boxer recently visited Nigeria for the first time, participating in celebrations for the nation’s 65th Independence Day. He also appeared as a special guest at the “Chaos in the Ring” boxing event at Lagos’ Mobolaji Johnson Arena on October 1, where large crowds turned out to greet him.

The awards ceremony also honoured other remarkable sporting achievements. Teenage football sensation Michelle Agyemang was named Women’s Breakthrough Athlete of the Year after scoring within 41 seconds on her England debut, helping the Lionesses reach the Euro 2025 final.

Golf superstar Rory McIlroy received the Sportsman of the Year award following a stellar season, including a Masters triumph and Ryder Cup success. Chloe Kelly was recognised as Sportswoman of the Year for her key role in England’s Euro title defence, while the Lionesses claimed Sports Team of the Year. Goalkeeper Hannah Hampton earned the SJA President’s Award for her consistently outstanding performances at both club and international levels.
