The Plateau State Government has strongly rejected circulating reports alleging that Governor Caleb Mutfwang has switched allegiance to the Young Progressives Party (YPP), describing the story as baseless and deliberately misleading.
In a statement released on Friday, the Director of Press and Public Affairs, Dr. Gyang Bere, condemned the rumour as “a fabricated falsehood, irresponsibly spread by those bent on causing confusion and stirring political unrest.”
Bere emphasized that the governor remains firmly committed to his current mandate and has not defected to any political party.
The statement read, “Governor Mutfwang has not joined the Young Progressives Party. Should there ever be any change in his political status, the people of Plateau State and concerned Nigerians will be duly informed through official, credible, and authorised communication channels.”
The government called on residents to ignore the claim and remain focused on the administration’s ongoing development projects across the state.
“We urge supporters, citizens, and all well-meaning individuals in Plateau to dismiss this fabrication entirely. Stay resolute, alert, and united in our shared effort to protect and advance the Plateau agenda,” the statement added.
Bere further noted that under Governor Mutfwang’s leadership, the state continues to be “secure, stable, and progressing with renewed strength and resilience.”
Speculation about the governor’s supposed defection has persisted for months, drawing mixed reactions from members of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
However, Governor Mutfwang—who was elected under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party—has repeatedly affirmed his loyalty to the PDP.
He once again reiterated that stance on Friday, confirming that he has not left the party.
