French striker and Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappé has taken legal action against Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), escalating a high-value dispute worth hundreds of millions of euros.
The Paris Labour Court heard the case on Monday, highlighting a tense financial standoff between the football superstar and his former club.
According to Le Parisien, Mbappé is seeking €240 million in compensation, claiming losses related to his departure in the summer of 2024. He argues that PSG failed to convert his fixed-term contract into a permanent one and owes him €55 million in unpaid wages and bonuses.
“This is fundamentally a matter of an employee confronting an employer that has not fulfilled its salary obligations,” said Mbappé’s lawyer, Delphine Weil-Heden, at an April press briefing.
While Mbappé recovers from an ankle injury, Weil-Heden emphasized that he is “defending his rights not only for himself but for other players who may have been similarly wronged by the club.”
In response, PSG is counterclaiming €180 million, alleging that Mbappé misled the club after assuring them he would not leave on a free transfer.
During the court proceedings, PSG disclosed that Mbappé had previously turned down a €300 million offer from a Saudi club in July 2023, before refusing to extend his contract, leaving PSG without a transfer fee.
The club further accused Mbappé’s legal team of crafting an “absurd narrative.” Earlier this year, Mbappé briefly obtained a provisional attachment of the contested amount, but the court later overturned that decision on May 26.
