Senator representing Abia North, Orji Uzor Kalu, has claimed that the ongoing insecurity in Nigeria is politically motivated, aimed at undermining President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Speaking on Channels Television on Sunday, Kalu alleged that both local and international actors are employing mercenaries to escalate attacks across the country.

He drew parallels with past election-related crises, saying, “What we are seeing aligns with election periods. When elections approach, certain actors try to pressure the government, and all kinds of attacks start happening.”

Kalu referenced similar patterns during former President Goodluck Jonathan’s tenure, adding, “They did it to Jonathan. This is about 2027.”

According to him, some bandits are effectively mercenaries sponsored by politicians seeking to destabilise a government focused on economic reforms. “The intelligence community knows. People are funding these attacks to weaken the administration,” he said.

He further alleged involvement from foreign actors, stating, “The terrorists and bandits are orchestrated by some members of international communities alongside local actors who want to destabilise the government.”

Despite the challenges, Kalu expressed confidence in President Tinubu’s response. “Tinubu is working tirelessly… Those girls will be recovered. The government is making every effort. Our service chiefs and security operatives are fully engaged to track them down,” he said.

He concluded, “It is a challenge, but the essence of government is to protect life and property, and we are fully capable of meeting this responsibility.”
