The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has clarified that the recent U.S. visa restrictions announced by Secretary of State Marco Rubio will not affect Nigeria’s diplomatic relationship with the United States.
According to Idris, despite the targeted restrictions, Nigeria–U.S. relations remain solid and unaffected at the government-to-government level.
Gossip News Now earlier reported that the U.S. government on Wednesday imposed visa restrictions on Nigerians allegedly involved in funding or supporting acts of genocide against Christians in the country.
Addressing the issue during an interview on Arise Television, Idris reiterated that both nations continue to enjoy a healthy and cooperative relationship, noting that they are actively working together to resolve any emerging concerns.
He explained:
“Issues of visas are the prerogative of every nation. The American government—or any government, including Nigeria—has its own visa policies, which are reviewed periodically.”
Speaking against the backdrop of recent diplomatic tensions, Idris added:
“Government to government, Nigeria and the United States are still working closely to find solutions wherever there are grey areas or challenges. The Government of Nigeria remains committed, open, and fully engaged with the United States to address any matters that need clarification.”
He emphasized that despite the visa restrictions on certain individuals, overall relations between both countries remain stable.
“We still have normal diplomatic relations between Nigeria and the United States, and we are working perfectly together to continue advancing the mutual interests of both countries,” Idris said.
