Former Barcelona winger and Nigerian football icon, Emmanuel Amunike, has expressed confidence that the Super Eagles, led by Victor Osimhen, can claim glory at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
Amunike highlighted Osimhen’s leadership qualities and determination, noting that the striker’s hunger for success could inspire the team to continental triumph. Speaking ahead of Nigeria’s Group C clash with Tunisia, the ex-international praised Osimhen’s character and commitment, adding that talent alone is not enough to secure victory.
“When I look back at Osimhen, the same leadership and determination he demonstrates today is what he has shown throughout his career,” Amunike told Victor Modo. “I am thrilled to see him have the opportunity to win the AFCON, but success must be earned through hard work on the pitch, not just words.”
The Super Eagles enter AFCON 2025 carrying high expectations following their runner-up finish at the previous tournament in Ivory Coast under former coach Jose Peseiro. Despite falling short in the final, Amunike believes Osimhen remains the natural leader of the squad, having consistently demonstrated commitment from Nigeria’s youth teams to the senior side.
“One thing I can always tell you is that Osimhen’s character as a leader today reflects what he has always displayed over the years,” Amunike added. “Seeing him lift the AFCON trophy would be a well-deserved moment of pride for him and for Nigerian football.”
Nigeria began their Morocco 2025 campaign with a 2-1 victory over Tanzania, easing early tournament nerves while highlighting areas for improvement. Their focus now shifts to Saturday’s crucial Group C clash with Tunisia, a match that could determine the group standings.
While the Super Eagles are favourites to prevail, Tunisia will be eager to assert their dominance and secure the top spot in the group, setting the stage for an intense contest.
