The All Progressives Congress (APC) has said it will weigh its options if Rivers State Governor, Sim Fubara, indicates interest in joining the party.

The development comes amid renewed political maneuvering in Rivers State, following the reconciliation between Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

Recall that President Bola Tinubu had reinstated Fubara after his suspension under a six-month emergency rule, imposed during his face-off with Wike and lawmakers in the state. Describing the truce as a turning point, Fubara recently declared that he was now at peace with Wike.

Despite this, a fresh tussle for control of Rivers politics has emerged. The APC, buoyed by its landslide victory in the recent local government elections—winning 20 chairmanship seats and most councillorship positions—has been openly courting Fubara. The sweep has shifted grassroots power in favour of the APC, undermining the dominance of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in one of its traditional strongholds.

In an interview with Punch, APC Deputy National Organising Secretary, Nze Chidi Duru, said the decision to defect rests solely with the governor.

“We are not in any position to dictate to the governor,” Duru said. “If he believes his interest will be better served in our party and chooses to join, it will be his decision. At the appropriate time, the APC will respond if he reaches out.”

He added that President Tinubu’s intervention helped stabilize the state, and urged Fubara to now concentrate on governance.

“With peace restored, what we expect is that the governor will focus on delivering good governance, uniting stakeholders, and ensuring Rivers people benefit from stable leadership,” Duru stated.
