Crystal Palace have completed a landmark transfer, bringing Wales international Brennan Johnson to Selhurst Park from Tottenham Hotspur in a deal worth £35 million — the highest fee in the club’s history.
The 24-year-old attacker has agreed to a four-and-a-half-year contract and will take the No. 11 shirt. His arrival breaks Palace’s previous transfer record of £27 million, paid for Christian Benteke in 2016. Johnson could make his debut as early as Sunday when Palace face Newcastle United in the Premier League.
Johnson opted for Palace after productive talks with manager Oliver Glasner, despite strong interest from AFC Bournemouth. The Cherries had identified him as a possible replacement for Antoine Semenyo, who has been linked with Manchester City.
Speaking after sealing the move, Johnson shared his enthusiasm. “I’m really excited and really happy,” he said. “Crystal Palace is a fantastic club I’ve always respected. It feels like the right moment for me to come in and contribute to what the team is building.”
Chairman Steve Parish expressed his delight at securing the forward’s signature, highlighting his credentials at every level. “We are delighted to welcome Brennan to Crystal Palace,” Parish stated. “He’s an exciting young player with a strong record domestically, internationally, and in European competition. His addition strengthens our attacking options as we prepare to compete on several fronts, including Europe for the first time.”
Manager Oliver Glasner echoed that sentiment, praising both the player and the club’s swift action in the transfer window. “I’m thrilled Brennan has joined us,” Glasner said. “He came in early, and credit to the club for finalizing the deal quickly. He brings pace, energy, and goals to our attack, and with a demanding schedule ahead, he will be very important for us.”
Johnson originally joined Tottenham from Nottingham Forest in 2023 for £47.5 million and enjoyed an impressive spell in North London. Last season, he finished as Spurs’ top scorer with 18 goals and seven assists, including the winning goal in the UEFA Europa League final against Manchester United — a strike that ended the club’s 17-year wait for a major trophy. This campaign, however, opportunities were more limited under Thomas Frank, with Johnson scoring four goals in 22 appearances.
On the international stage, Johnson has earned 42 caps for Wales, scoring seven times and representing his country at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. His rise to prominence began during Nottingham Forest’s 2021/2022 promotion-winning season, when he netted 19 goals and claimed the Championship Young Player of the Season award. He later recorded double-digit goals in his first Premier League season.
With his proven experience and attacking quality, Palace will hope their record investment pays dividends as they pursue success both domestically and in Europe.
