Driver’s Son Breaks Silence, Explains How Anthony Joshua Escaped Fatal Crash

The son of Anthony Joshua’s driver, 19-year-old Ifeoluwa Adeniyi, has spoken publicly to defend his father, insisting that the tragic crash which killed two members of Joshua’s team was not due to reckless driving.

The accident took place on December 29, 2025, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, when the Lexus SUV transporting Joshua and his team collided with a stationary truck. The crash claimed the lives of Joshua’s personal trainer, Kevin Latif Ayodele, and strength and conditioning coach, Sina Ghami, while Joshua survived with minor injuries.

Following the incident, driver Adeniyi Kayode was charged with manslaughter by the Ogun State Police Command and remanded at Sagamu Correctional Centre pending completion of bail procedures.

In an interview with the Daily Mail, Ifeoluwa Adeniyi stated that his father was driving within the speed limit and that the collision resulted from brake failure. “Dad is not a fast driver; he was following the speed limit when the brakes failed. He pressed the pedal, but nothing happened,” he explained.

He also described his father’s attempt to avoid the truck, saying: “He swerved to dodge the truck by the roadside but still hit it. He has been driving for Anthony for three years; he’s a skilled and responsible driver.”

Ifeoluwa added that Joshua initially sat in the front passenger seat but moved to the back to improve the driver’s visibility. “At the start of the journey from Lagos, Anthony was sitting in the front, but my dad asked him to move behind because he was blocking his view,” he said.

The trip was reportedly meant to take Joshua to visit his family in Sagamu after being picked up from the airport. The accident occurred just minutes before their arrival. “They were only a few minutes away when the crash occurred,” Ifeoluwa noted.

He emphasized that the collision could have been avoided if the truck had not been parked illegally along the roadside. “It’s not his fault. If the truck hadn’t been parked there, this wouldn’t have happened,” he said.

Adeniyi Kayode’s lawyer, Olalekan Abiodun, also described the incident as a tragic accident and confirmed that his client pleaded not guilty. He supported the brake failure explanation and corroborated the seat swap, saying that Joshua’s size obstructed the driver’s wing mirror, prompting the change.

“Anthony initially sat in front, but because of his size, the driver couldn’t see the wing mirror properly, which is why he was asked to move behind the driver’s seat,” Abiodun explained. He further confirmed that Kevin Latif later swapped seats with Joshua, and that the illegally parked truck contributed significantly to the crash just minutes from Sagamu.
