The Rivers Ijaw Peoples Congress has announced a change in political allegiance, declaring its support for the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, while withdrawing backing for Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara.
The announcement was made by the group’s chairman, Senator George Sekibo, during Wike’s “Thank You Visit” to Okrika Local Government Area on Saturday.
Sekibo explained that the decision was influenced by Wike’s long-standing contributions to the Ijaw community in Rivers State. Although he described the rift between Wike and Fubara as regrettable, he stressed that the Ijaw people remain appreciative of the minister’s efforts over the years.
He stated that the congress chose to stand with Wike out of gratitude, emphasizing that the community does not take past support and developmental efforts for granted. According to him, the group is prepared to follow the minister’s guidance moving forward.
In his remarks, Sekibo said the Ijaw people are not ungrateful and have therefore resolved to abandon Fubara in favour of Wike, acknowledging the minister’s role in advancing the interests of the community.
Also speaking at the event, the Chairman of Okrika Local Government Council, Akuro Tobin, described Wike as his political mentor. He credited the minister for creating opportunities that enabled many indigenes of Okrika to secure both elective and appointive political offices.
Tobin further assured Wike that the entire Okrika Local Government Area — including men, women, and youths — stands solidly behind him and President Bola Tinubu.
Responding to the endorsements, Wike expressed appreciation for the show of loyalty. He commended President Tinubu as a leader who fulfills his promises and encouraged the people to continue supporting leaders who demonstrate commitment and integrity.
