A significant political shift is unfolding in Anambra State, where four lawmakers and several grassroots leaders have exited the Labour Party to align with the African Democratic Congress. The development closely follows the recent decision by Peter Obi to join the ADC, a move that appears to be influencing his loyal supporters across the region.

Leading the group of defecting legislators is Jude Ifeanyi Umennajiego, accompanied by fellow Assembly members Fred Ezenwa, Kingsley Udemezue, and Henry Nigeria Mbachu. Their exit marks a notable change in the state’s political landscape, with observers suggesting it could influence broader alignments ahead of future elections.

Several influential party stakeholders also made the transition, including Barrister Okoli Akirika, who previously served as both State Secretary and Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party. Others who joined the movement include Engineer Theo Egbe and former Women Affairs Commissioner Harrieta Agbata. Their collective decision underscores the scale of the shift currently taking place.

Speaking during the gathering, Umennajiego suggested that the exits represent only the early phase of a broader political transition, indicating that more departures could follow throughout the South-East. He explained that many supporters view their decision as a reflection of their continued trust in Obi’s leadership and long-term political direction.

Akirika also addressed attendees, revealing that similar movements had already begun in neighboring states such as Enugu State. He emphasized that their decision was guided by loyalty and shared political ideals, urging participants to formalize their membership in the ADC at their ward level to ensure proper organization and unity within the party’s structure.

In a communiqué presented during the event, Egbe confirmed that all individuals involved had formally severed ties with the Labour Party. He encouraged members to actively engage with ADC officials at the grassroots level to strengthen collaboration and ensure a smooth transition. The gathering concluded with renewed calls for unity, with participants describing the movement as a collective effort aimed at promoting accountable leadership and protecting democratic values.
