‘You Can’t Keep Breaking The Law And Expect Tinubu To Rescue You’ – Rivers Lawmaker Stresses Need for Fubara’s Impeachment

Political tensions in Rivers State have escalated, with lawmakers calling for the impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, citing repeated violations of public trust and the law. Enemi George, spokesperson for the Rivers State House of Assembly, criticized the governor’s actions, warning that President Bola Tinubu cannot be expected to intervene indefinitely in the face of constitutional breaches.

Speaking on Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today,’ George emphasized the futility of relying on political negotiations when legal boundaries are repeatedly ignored. He stressed that the governor had treated public funds as personal assets and had disregarded agreements brokered by the President.

“Even if you want to play politics, you do that according to the law, within the confines of the law. If you allow yourself to breach the constitution, you can’t blame anybody for the consequence of your action,” George stated, underscoring the primacy of legality over political maneuvering.

George further noted that President Tinubu had invested significant effort in bringing stakeholders together to mediate the situation, but Fubara had allegedly reneged on the accord, deepening the political crisis.

“You can’t keep breaking the law and expect the president to come to your rescue,” George added, reflecting the lawmaker’s frustration with repeated misconduct.

This latest call for impeachment comes amid a series of defection and political realignments in Rivers State, as observers monitor whether the House of Assembly will proceed with the legal process or if further negotiations will be attempted. Analysts suggest that persistent disregard for constitutional obligations could set a precedent affecting governance standards across the state.

Commentary: The Balance Between Political Mediation and Legal Accountability

The Rivers State scenario highlights the challenges of governance in highly polarized political environments. While mediation by national leaders is essential to maintain stability, it cannot replace adherence to legal frameworks. George’s statement reinforces that persistent violations may force legislative bodies to act decisively to uphold the law.

For President Tinubu, the situation underscores the limits of political influence when officials flout agreed-upon norms. It also signals to other governors and state officials that continuous legal breaches, even in politically sensitive contexts, will attract scrutiny and potential action.

This crisis serves as a reminder that political stability and rule of law must go hand in hand, and that legal accountability cannot be indefinitely replaced by negotiation or presidential intervention.
