PDP Chieftain Iroegbu: Wike Trying to Undermine Nigeria’s Democracy, APC and Tinubu Responsible

Dickson Iroegbu, a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and part of the Obidient Movement, has charged that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu are providing Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, with undue influence to destabilize Nigeria’s democratic institutions and weaken the PDP.

Allegations of Strategic Empowerment

Speaking on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme, Iroegbu suggested that Wike has been strategically positioned to disrupt opposition politics in Rivers State. He claimed the minister now behaves as if he operates above the President himself.

“The reality is that the APC, through the enabling role of the President, provided Wike with the platform he is now using to almost sabotage democracy in Nigeria. They positioned him to undermine, weaken, and potentially destroy the PDP. Having nearly achieved that, he now seems to consider himself bigger than the President,” Iroegbu stated.

According to the PDP chieftain, Wike leverages this perceived empowerment to assert dominance over local political processes, controlling decisions in Rivers State and limiting accountability.

“If you listen to the meetings he holds with his supporters in Rivers State, he makes it clear that nobody—absolutely no one—can determine what happens in the state. Wike has become a larger-than-life figure, a creation of the Tinubu administration,” Iroegbu added.

Implications for Nigerian Democracy

Iroegbu warned that the unfolding situation represents a threat not only to the PDP but to Nigeria’s broader democratic framework. He argued that such political dynamics concentrate power in the hands of a few individuals, potentially undermining institutional checks and balances.

The PDP leader expressed optimism, however, that ongoing political struggles might ultimately galvanize citizens to reclaim influence over governance.

“We hope this conflict continues in a way that allows citizens to take back their nation,” Iroegbu concluded.

Commentary

Political analysts note that Iroegbu’s claims reflect growing tensions between the APC-led federal government and the PDP-controlled factions in Rivers State. If Wike’s influence is perceived as exceeding constitutional bounds, it could exacerbate partisanship and heighten the risk of political instability. Observers also suggest that such narratives may be used to rally public support for the PDP while challenging the federal government’s interventions in state politics.
