Former Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, has called for measured international involvement in Nigeria’s upcoming 2027 general elections. Speaking on Arise Television, Tambuwal emphasized that foreign observation and engagement can help ensure transparency and credibility at the polls.
Reflecting on past elections, he cited the 2015 general election as an example, noting that international engagement contributed to the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) defeating then-President Goodluck Jonathan. At that time, Tambuwal was part of the APC, but he has since realigned politically with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) while maintaining cooperative ties with the coalition-backed African Democratic Congress (ADC).
“Looking at our recent history, the involvement of the international community influenced the 2015 election, which the APC benefited from. I expect similar engagement from the international community ahead of 2027,” Tambuwal stated.
He clarified that inviting international oversight does not replace domestic efforts for credible elections. Tambuwal emphasized that such support is a supplement, not a substitute for Nigeria’s own election management processes.
“It’s not the only way, but it is one of the ways,” he explained, underscoring the importance of multi-layered approaches to fair elections.
Tambuwal also highlighted that his appeal was not aimed at any specific nation. Instead, he encouraged democratic countries worldwide to collaborate in promoting free and fair elections, without direct interference in Nigeria’s sovereign process.
“I am not referring specifically to the United States. I mean democratic countries and the international community ensuring, without direct interference, that elections are conducted freely, fairly, and credibly,” he said.
Political analysts observe that Tambuwal’s suggestion aligns with a broader trend in emerging democracies, where measured international engagement can act as both a deterrent to electoral malpractice and a confidence booster for voters. However, critics argue that while external observation is helpful, domestic institutions must remain the principal enforcers of election integrity to maintain national sovereignty.
Commentary: Tambuwal’s position signals a proactive approach to addressing voter confidence and transparency ahead of 2027. By advocating for global collaboration, he positions himself as a reform-minded leader, promoting multi-stakeholder engagement in Nigeria’s electoral process while navigating the delicate balance between sovereignty and international support.
