Why Wike Avoided Fubara’s LGA During Rivers State Tour

During his recently concluded “thank-you” tour across Rivers State, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, deliberately avoided visiting Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area, the home council of Governor Siminalayi Fubara. Political observers suggest that this decision was influenced by the current tensions between the two leaders and the volatile local political atmosphere.

A senior APC figure from Opobo/Nkoro, who preferred to remain anonymous, explained that Wike’s move was primarily a precautionary measure.

“If you are the source of the current political tension in the state, created by Wike himself, would you have gone to Opobo? That would be like putting your hand in crocodile-infested water. No one told him not to come, and no threats were made, but I think he made the decision for himself. Give it to him—he knows what is best for him,” the source said.

The politician added that Wike’s experiences in nearby Bonny Local Government Area likely informed his choice.

“In Bonny, when the minister visited, the place was almost empty, as we saw on TV. Considering the history of Bonny and Opobo, it was expected. So, naturally, he knew he wouldn’t visit Opobo,” the source explained.

Asked about potential outcomes if Wike had attended Opobo, the politician noted that no physical threat existed but emphasized symbolic and reputational considerations:

“Nothing physically, but he would have had to answer to himself. No true son or daughter of Opobo would have attended, so he knows better.”

Tour Highlights and Local Turnout

Wike concluded the tour in his own stronghold, Obio/Akpor LGA, with a rally at the Captain Elechi Amadi Polytechnic in Rumuola. The event reportedly attracted the largest turnout of the tour, creating significant traffic congestion along Aba Road and surrounding areas as supporters gathered in large numbers to welcome the former Rivers State governor.

Analysis

Political analysts observe that Wike’s deliberate avoidance of Fubara’s home council underscores the fragility of alliances within Rivers State politics. While avoiding Opobo/Nkoro may have prevented potential embarrassment or political backlash, it also highlights the deep-rooted tensions between the former governor and the sitting governor, which continue to influence grassroots political dynamics.

Some commentators suggest that Wike’s strategy reflects a careful balancing act: projecting accessibility to the public while sidestepping locations where political loyalties might be divided. Such decisions, they argue, are becoming a common feature in regions with intense political rivalries, where symbolic gestures often carry as much weight as policy announcements or public appearances.

By focusing on areas where his influence is strongest, Wike may be consolidating his political base while avoiding unnecessary confrontations that could weaken his position ahead of future elections. The strategic omission of Opobo/Nkoro serves as a reminder that in Nigerian state politics, appearances and perception can be as consequential as actual policy or governance decisions.
