Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has challenged claims that Nigerian states are struggling financially, asserting that state governments are actually receiving higher allocations.

Speaking at the groundbreaking of the ₦39.3 billion Otovwodo Flyover in Ughelli North Local Government Area, the governor highlighted a significant increase in funds disbursed from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC). He urged fellow governors to utilize these resources effectively for impactful development.

“More funds are coming into the states. I am not the kind of governor who pretends otherwise. The money is there. Use the money—just as we are using it in Delta. Deploy it for development in your own state so the people can feel the impact,” Oborevwori stated, emphasizing transparency and proactive governance.

The governor criticized leaders who project financial difficulties despite improved revenue, stressing that the reality is quite the opposite. According to him, FAAC allocations now give states the capacity to accelerate infrastructure projects and public services.

He described the Otovwodo Flyover as a strategic initiative aimed at easing congestion and enhancing commercial activity along one of Delta’s busiest corridors. Connecting Warri, Asaba, and Patani along the East-West highway, the junction serves as a vital artery for trade and daily commute.

Oborevwori underlined that the project reflects his administration’s commitment to accountable, citizen-centered infrastructure. Once completed, he said, the flyover will reduce travel time, improve road safety, and create a boost for local businesses.

Commentary and Analysis: Oborevwori’s remarks suggest a broader push by some governors to redefine the narrative around state finances in Nigeria. By highlighting FAAC growth and linking it to tangible infrastructure delivery, he positions Delta State as a model of fiscal responsibility. Analysts note that such public statements also function as political signaling, demonstrating effective resource management ahead of upcoming elections while encouraging other states to follow suit. The Otovwodo Flyover itself exemplifies how strategic investments can simultaneously address urban congestion and support economic activity, reinforcing the argument that states now have both the means and the responsibility to drive development.
