Fresh tension has emerged within the Nigerian military following the reported detention of a serving Brigadier General over alleged links to retired Major General Danjuma Hamisu Ali-Keffi. The development has drawn attention to an already contentious dispute involving former Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai.
Military sources indicate that Brig. Gen. Gabriel E. Archibong, who serves at the Nigerian Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) in Minna, was taken into custody more than a week ago. He is currently said to be held at the Army’s Special Investigation Bureau. The arrest reportedly followed concerns about his communications with Ali-Keffi and claims that he was not fully cooperating with military authorities.
According to insiders, soldiers conducted a search of Archibong’s residence in Lugbe shortly after his detention. While no incriminating materials were reportedly discovered during the three-hour operation, electronic devices including phones and a laptop were seized for further scrutiny. Those close to the detained officer have expressed anxiety about the possible damage to his professional standing, maintaining that he committed no wrongdoing.
The case unfolds against the backdrop of Ali-Keffi’s long-running dispute with the Army. In October 2020, he was appointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari to head Operation Service Wide (OSW), a covert task force focused on tackling financial crimes and terror funding. Ali-Keffi later alleged that suspects apprehended under the operation were released while still in military custody, a claim that intensified friction within security circles.
Ali-Keffi has since taken legal action. In December 2025, he filed a suit at the National Industrial Court in Abuja challenging what he described as his unlawful 64-day detention without charge and compulsory retirement. In his filing, he alleged torture, denial of fair hearing, and breaches of constitutional and military regulations. He is seeking substantial financial redress, including ₦100 billion in compensatory damages, an equal sum in punitive damages, ₦120 million in special damages, and a declaration voiding his compulsory retirement.
Reacting to recent events, Ali-Keffi suggested that attempts to hold certain individuals accountable were being misconstrued as attacks on the institution itself. He criticized what he described as a conflation of personal accountability with institutional loyalty, arguing that scrutiny of leadership decisions should not be equated with undermining the Army.
Beyond the courtroom, Ali-Keffi has claimed that OSW investigations—carried out alongside the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit—uncovered links between terror-financing suspects and influential figures across military and financial sectors. While he clarified that he was not directly accusing former army chiefs such as Buratai or Lt. Gen. Faruk Yahaya, nor former Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele or ex-Attorney-General Abubakar Malami, he maintained that investigative findings indicated connections worth examining.
Commentary and Analysis
The unfolding controversy underscores the delicate balance between institutional cohesion and internal accountability within security agencies. Detaining a serving senior officer over alleged associations inevitably raises questions about due process, transparency, and morale within the ranks.
At the same time, Ali-Keffi’s legal claims and public statements suggest deeper tensions related to the handling of sensitive security investigations. Allegations of terror-financing links involving high-profile individuals are inherently explosive, particularly in a country grappling with insurgency and banditry.
Observers note that the situation could test the Army’s commitment to procedural fairness while it prepares to defend itself in court. How the institution manages this episode—both legally and administratively—may shape public confidence in its leadership and internal oversight mechanisms.
Ultimately, the matter extends beyond individual reputations. It touches on broader themes of accountability, institutional integrity, and the complexities of navigating high-stakes security operations in a politically charged environment.
