Tension continues to build in Rivers State as the Rivers State House of Assembly has yet to reconvene after setting January 15, 2026, as the date to resume plenary. The absence of legislative activity has raised fresh questions about the fate of the impeachment process initiated against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu.
When lawmakers first gathered on January 8 for their inaugural sitting of the year, proceedings took a dramatic turn. During that session, members formally launched impeachment steps, citing what they described as serious constitutional violations. The House then adjourned with a promise to continue deliberations a week later.
Yet, when observers visited the temporary legislative quarters along Aba Road on the scheduled date, there was no sign of plenary. No official statement was released to clarify the delay, leaving the political atmosphere thick with speculation.
Allegations at the Center of the Dispute
The impeachment move stemmed from accusations that include:
- Demolition of the Assembly complex
- Expenditure of public funds without legislative authorization
- Additional actions deemed inconsistent with constitutional obligations
Lawmakers backing the motion framed the allegations as acts of gross misconduct requiring constitutional scrutiny.
Internal Appeals for Restraint
Interestingly, not all voices within the Assembly are aligned with pushing the impeachment forward at full speed. In the days leading up to the expected reconvening, two lawmakers — Barile Nwakoh of Khana Constituency I and Emilia Amadi of Obio/Akpor Constituency II — urged colleagues to reconsider the tempo of the proceedings.
They acknowledged that certain actions attributed to the executive might warrant examination but emphasized the need to heed calls from respected elders and stakeholders across the state advocating reconciliation.
Earlier in the week, Minority Leader Sylvanus Nwankwo (Omuma Constituency) and Peter Abbey (Degema Constituency) had also appealed for caution, proposing dialogue as a possible pathway to defuse escalating tensions.
Silence From Leadership
Despite mounting interest, Speaker Martin Amaewhule and the Assembly leadership have not provided clarity on why the House failed to resume as scheduled. The lack of communication has fueled public curiosity and heightened political suspense.
Political Analysis: A Tactical Pause or Strategic Recalibration?
Political observers suggest that the delay could represent a tactical pause rather than abandonment of the impeachment plan. Impeachment proceedings are often complex, requiring careful political calculations and alignment within legislative ranks.
The visible split among lawmakers signals internal negotiations may be underway. Reconciliation efforts, if successful, could prevent further polarization within Rivers’ political landscape. Conversely, prolonged uncertainty might intensify executive-legislative friction.
As the state watches closely, the next move by the Assembly will likely determine whether Rivers enters a deeper constitutional confrontation or pivots toward compromise and political stability.
