Police Nab Criminal Gang Linked to Attack on Senator Ngige’s Convoy

A coordinated police operation in Anambra State has led to the disruption of a criminal network allegedly responsible for attacking the convoy of former Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige. Authorities described the mission as part of a broader strategy to dismantle violent groups threatening public safety.

The operation, executed by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in Awkuzu, followed actionable intelligence that tracked the suspects to Enugwu Agidi junction. What began as an interception quickly escalated into a prolonged exchange of gunfire that reportedly lasted close to two hours.

Casualties and Escape

During the confrontation, two suspected gang members were fatally wounded. Several others managed to escape, though police believe some fled with gunshot injuries. Officials have since intensified efforts to apprehend those still at large.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the suspects responded aggressively when confronted. He noted that officers were compelled to defend themselves during the shootout.

Items Retrieved at the Scene

Following the operation, law enforcement officers recovered a range of items believed to be linked to the gang’s activities. Rather than routine possessions, the discoveries suggest organised criminal intent. Among the materials seized were:

  • A Toyota Highlander vehicle believed to have been used in operations
  • Firearms, including a T.06 rifle and pump-action shotguns
  • Ammunition comprising multiple rounds and live cartridges
  • A red beret associated with cult affiliation
  • Assorted ritual charms allegedly tied to criminal practices

Police sources indicated that the variety of weapons and paraphernalia points to coordinated and premeditated actions.

Confession and Cult Links

Authorities disclosed that one of the injured suspects, before succumbing to his wounds, allegedly admitted involvement in the attack on Ngige’s convoy. He further claimed membership in the Vikings confraternity’s strike squad, suggesting the assault was an act of retaliation linked to internal cult rivalries.

Investigators are examining the possible overlap between cult violence, armed robbery, and separatist-linked activity, as initial intelligence hinted at multiple affiliations within the gang.

Police Leadership Reacts

Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, praised the operatives for their courage under fire. He reiterated the command’s commitment to rooting out violent offenders and restoring confidence in public security.

Orutugu also urged hospitals and medical practitioners to promptly report gunshot cases to the nearest police formation, stressing that such cooperation is critical in tracking fleeing suspects.

Analysis: Security Implications for Anambra

The attack on a high-profile political figure’s convoy underscores ongoing security challenges in parts of the state. Analysts suggest that the intersection of cultism, armed robbery, and politically sensitive targets reflects a complex security environment requiring sustained intelligence coordination.

The swift police response may signal strengthened operational readiness, yet the escape of injured suspects highlights the importance of inter-agency collaboration and community vigilance. Moving forward, public trust will depend not only on arrests but also on long-term measures aimed at preventing the resurgence of such violent networks.

As investigations continue, residents await further updates on whether the crackdown will deliver lasting stability.
