Darlington Orji, Special Assistant on Political Matters to Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, has described the impeachment proceedings against the governor as a struggle for the soul of the state.
Gossip News Now reports that members of the Rivers State House of Assembly on Friday reaffirmed their commitment to pursuing the impeachment of Governor Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, over allegations of gross misconduct.
Earlier, four lawmakers—Sylvanus Nwankwo (Omuma), Peter Abbey (Degema), Barile Nwakoh (Khana I), and Emilia Amadi (Obio/Akpor II)—had withdrawn from the impeachment process, citing a preference for dialogue and political reconciliation.
However, during a live plenary session on Friday, they reversed their decision, citing continued hostility from the governor and his deputy, as well as the perceived neglect of repeated calls for dialogue. The Assembly then voted unanimously to proceed with the impeachment.
Speaking to Punch in response to the developments, Orji claimed the lawmakers were merely “acting out a drama script.”
He added that Governor Fubara remains committed to providing effective leadership, regardless of what he described as a “supremacy battle” with those who believe they installed him in office.
“Everyone can see they are following a script; these lawmakers are not acting independently. They cannot claim to have reconsidered for the good of Rivers people, only to turn around and give flimsy excuses about social media abuse,” Orji said.
He further stated, “The governor of Rivers State is determined to provide quality leadership. What is happening here is a fight for the soul of the state. It is a supremacy battle, where a man thinks he made Fubara governor and can remove him at will. But by the grace of God, we will overcome it.”
