Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi has stated that head coach Eric Chelle is encouraging every member of the Nigerian squad to rise to the level of Victor Osimhen, whose performances have set the benchmark at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Ndidi praised the Galatasaray forward, calling him the type of player any team would dream of signing. Osimhen has been one of Nigeria’s most influential figures in the tournament, contributing four goals and two assists while also spearheading the team’s pressing play whenever they are out of possession.
The ex-Napoli star has also taken on leadership responsibilities, captaining the Super Eagles in their matches against Mozambique and in the semi-final clash with Morocco. Ndidi was unavailable for both fixtures—rested for the Mozambique match and suspended for the semi-final.
Speaking to the media ahead of Nigeria’s third-place showdown with Egypt, Ndidi explained that Chelle uses Osimhen’s work ethic and intensity as a standard for the entire squad.
“Osimhen is among the best strikers in world football. When you play against him, you immediately see how much influence he has on the team—he’s an outstanding player,” Ndidi said.
“We will naturally feel his absence if he’s not available, but that’s normal for someone of his quality.”
He continued:
“Since the coach came in, he has pushed everyone to get to the level Osimhen displays. Having him in your team is like having three strikers in one. Eric Chelle wants the entire squad to mirror that attitude. This team will be one to watch in the coming years.”
Gossip News Now notes that Osimhen was taken off during extra time in the semi-final against Morocco due to an ankle issue and was unable to participate in the resulting penalty shootout.
