As of January 2026, the average retail cost of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), popularly called cooking gas, is ₦1,080 per kilogram across the country.
Reports indicate that despite persistent challenges affecting Nigeria’s energy sector—such as supply shortages and foreign exchange instability—the price of cooking gas has dropped significantly in recent weeks.
Below is an estimate of the cost for different cylinder sizes calculated at ₦1,080 per kg:
- 1kg – ₦1,080
- 3kg – ₦3,240
- 5kg – ₦5,400
- 10kg – ₦10,800
- 12kg – ₦12,960
- 12.5kg – ₦13,500
Major Factors Affecting Cooking Gas Prices in Nigeria
Exchange Rate Instability
Due to limited domestic processing capacity, Nigeria continues to depend on imported LPG. Any decline in the value of the naira directly increases the cost of these imports.
Global Crude Oil Market Trends
The price of LPG is tied closely to international crude oil performance. When global oil prices rise, domestic LPG prices usually increase as well.
Weak Infrastructure Systems
Insufficient storage facilities, poor distribution networks, and high transportation expenses contribute to higher prices for consumers nationwide.
High Import Dependence
Even with Nigeria’s large natural gas reserves, a significant portion of LPG is still imported. Port fees, import duties, and clearance delays all add to the retail cost.
Regulatory and Tax-Related Issues
Inconsistent government policies, taxes on equipment, and the impact of deregulation—including the removal of subsidies—also influence price fluctuations.
Increasing Consumer Demand
As more households transition to LPG because it is cleaner and safer than charcoal or kerosene, rising demand continues to exert pressure on the available supply.
