FIFA President Gianni Infantino has strongly criticised the “unacceptable scenes” that marred Sunday’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final, following Senegal players walking off the pitch in protest over a late penalty awarded to Morocco.
In a statement released on January 19, Infantino condemned the behaviour of players, officials, and fans during the dramatic conclusion of the tournament.
“We strongly condemn the actions of certain supporters, as well as some Senegalese players and coaching staff. Leaving the field in this manner is unacceptable,” Infantino said.
He added, “Walking off the pitch like this cannot be tolerated, and neither can violence in our sport. Such behaviour is simply not right.”
According to Gossip News Now , the AFCON final descended into chaos during injury time while the score was 0-0, when Morocco were awarded a penalty following a VAR review for a challenge on Brahim Díaz.
The decision enraged Senegal’s players, many of whom left the field in protest. Tensions had already been elevated after Senegal had a goal disallowed minutes earlier for what appeared to be a minor foul.
Amid the confusion, former Liverpool forward Sadio Mané remained on the pitch, encouraging his teammates to return so the match could resume.
The unrest also spilled into the stands, as some Senegal supporters attempted to enter the field and clashed with security personnel, delaying the continuation of the game.
After more than ten minutes of stoppage, Díaz finally took the penalty, but his weak Panenka attempt was comfortably saved by Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.
The match drama continued in extra time when Pape Gueye scored a brilliant goal in the fourth minute, securing a 1-0 victory and delivering the AFCON title to Senegal.
Despite the controversy, Infantino praised Morocco for hosting “a fantastic tournament” and recognised their achievement as runners-up, highlighting the country’s strong preparation as it looks ahead to co-hosting the 2030 men’s World Cup.
He stressed, however, that all teams must respect referees’ decisions.
“Decisions made by match officials must always be respected, both on and off the pitch,” he said.
“Teams must compete within the Laws of the Game, because failing to do so undermines the very integrity of football.”
Infantino also warned that such behaviour sets a poor example for fans globally, particularly ahead of the upcoming 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
“It is the responsibility of players and teams to act responsibly and lead by example for spectators in the stadiums and millions watching around the world,” he added.
“The disturbing scenes we witnessed must be condemned and never repeated. They have no place in football, and I expect CAF’s disciplinary bodies to take the necessary action.”
