Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has taken a playful jab at Moroccan players and fans following their 1-0 defeat to Senegal in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final.
Morocco fell short after extra time, with Pape Gueye scoring the decisive goal to hand Senegal the continental title. Yet, much of the post-match conversation has revolved around the towels used by Senegal’s goalkeepers during the game.
Footage circulating online showed Moroccan players and stadium officials repeatedly taking towels meant to keep Senegal’s goalkeeper, Edouard Mendy’s, gloves dry. The towels were tossed into the stands, in what appeared to be attempts to distract the Senegalese keeper.
The incidents mirrored events from the semi-final between Nigeria and Morocco, where Nwabali himself was targeted. During that match, the Super Eagles’ goalkeeper was forced to return to the bench multiple times after his towels were taken away.
After Morocco’s loss in the final, Nwabali reacted quickly on his 𝕏 account, mocking the Moroccans in pidgin English and suggesting they use the towels to wipe their tears. He wrote: “Make Una use all my towel Una carry wipe Una tears.”
The drama continued as Senegal’s reserve goalkeeper, Yehvann Diouf, was also caught up in a tense moment during the final. Reports indicated that Moroccan ball boys tried to snatch the towel Diouf was holding for Mendy, prompting a brief on-field confrontation.
Despite the distractions and heated atmosphere, Senegal remained focused. Diouf vigilantly guarded the towel throughout the match, even chasing away ball boys to prevent further interference.
Ultimately, Senegal held their composure and secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory after 120 minutes, adding another memorable chapter to their AFCON history.
