The Bauchi State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Sunday announced the expulsion of Aminu Muhammad, a factional chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), and the suspension of his associate, Babayo Musa Garba, accusing them of impersonating party officials and attempting to undermine the party’s leadership.
The party made the announcement during a press briefing in Bauchi, reaffirming the authority of its State Chairman, Haruna Hassan, Gossip News Now reports.
Speaking to journalists, the Assistant Publicity Secretary, Harsanu Guyaba, said the party was surprised by a statement issued on Saturday, January 17, 2026, by what he described as “impostors and disgruntled elements” claiming to have suspended the state chairman and replaced him with his deputy over alleged anti-party activities.
“We want to categorically state that the action of these self-proclaimed impostors is nothing but a desperate attempt to destabilise the growing strength, popularity, and unity of the party in Bauchi State,” Guyaba said. “Their conduct is condemnable and contrary to the values and principles of our great party.”
Guyaba noted that Aminu Muhammad had already been expelled, while Babayo Musa Garba was placed on suspension, as indicated in official letters dated January 2, 2026.
He added that the ADC does not recognise any internal structure operating under the name ALGON. “The two individuals have no authority to speak for or act on behalf of the party. Aminu Muhammad is expelled, while Babayo Musa Garba remains suspended. The ADC does not recognise anything like ALGON as mischievously claimed.”
Members of the public and party supporters were urged to disregard any statements or publications attributed to the duo. Guyaba also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies to take note of the matter, assuring that the ADC leadership in Bauchi State remained united and focused on promoting internal democracy, justice, and credible leadership.
Factional Chairman Denies Expulsion
In response, Aminu Muhammad told Punch that he had not been expelled and claimed he remains a card-carrying member of the ADC in Bauchi State for the past eight years. He said he was never served with an expulsion notice and insisted he continues to serve as chairman of the ALGON structure within the party.
Muhammad further alleged that chairmen of the 20 local government ADC chapters in the state had invited the state chairman, Haruna Hassan, on January 17, 2026, to appear before a disciplinary committee over alleged breaches of the party constitution and anti-party conduct. The invitation letter, dated January 6, 2026, reportedly allowed the chairman ample opportunity to defend himself, but he allegedly failed to appear.
“In accordance with Article 15(C)(3) of the ADC Constitution, we resolved to suspend the State Chairman, Mallam Hassan Haruna, with immediate effect,” Muhammad stated. He added that the Deputy State Chairman, Mallam Mahmood Tabla, had been instructed to act in the chairman’s stead pending the conduct of a valid congress, while the suspended chairman retains the right to appeal within 14 days.
