Public affairs analyst, Jide Ojo, has suggested that former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, may exit the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 presidential election if he fails to secure the party’s presidential ticket.
Ojo made the remarks on Wednesday during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, predicting that Obi could lose the ADC nomination to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, particularly if the party opts for indirect primaries.
“Rumour has it that Atiku has been a very generous spender when it comes to party primaries,” Ojo said. “Assuming, without conceding, that in a free and fair ADC primary Atiku emerges victorious, I can see Peter Obi likely leaving the party for another platform to pursue his presidential ambition.”
He explained that Atiku is not only interested in securing the ADC ticket for himself but also in influencing who the party’s candidate might be, raising concerns that he could outspend Obi in the primaries.
Despite this, Ojo acknowledged that Obi commands significant support, noting that many high-profile politicians followed him to the ADC.
“I watched the live transmission of his defection from the Labour Party to ADC on December 31, 2025. On that day, at least four senators from the Southeast, around sixteen House of Representatives members, and several State House of Assembly members defected alongside him,” Ojo said.
He contrasted this with Atiku’s recent defection, stating that when Atiku joined the party in late November, no serving lawmaker or governor moved with him.
Ojo further emphasised that Obi’s declaration to be on the ballot for 2027 signals his determination not to play a subordinate role.
“When someone says, ‘I will be on the ballot,’ it means they are positioning themselves as the prime candidate. Even though the party logo appears on the ballot, the candidate who declares is asserting that they will not play second fiddle,” he explained.
