Bayern Munich’s impressive 27-game unbeaten streak in the Bundesliga came to an abrupt halt on Saturday as relegation-threatened Augsburg produced a stunning comeback victory at the Allianz Arena.
The reigning champions looked set for another routine outing when Japanese defender Hiroki Ito headed Bayern into the lead midway through the first half. Rising above his marker to meet Michael Olise’s corner in the 23rd minute, Ito’s powerful header marked Olise’s 14th league assist of the campaign — the highest in the division.
Despite the early advantage, Vincent Kompany’s men appeared unusually vulnerable. Augsburg nearly drew level just before half-time when Robin Fellhauer’s thunderous strike crashed off the woodwork, serving as a clear warning for the hosts.
That alert went largely ignored after the restart. Bayern survived another scare when Elvis Rexhbecaj fired over from close range with the goal at his mercy. However, the visitors soon found their breakthrough. With 15 minutes left on the clock, Arthur Chaves outmuscled goalkeeper Jonas Urbig at a corner kick before nodding the ball into an empty net to restore parity.
Urbig, making a rare appearance after Manuel Neuer was rested as part of four changes by Kompany, endured a difficult afternoon and struggled to impose himself in the penalty area.
The decisive blow came nine minutes from time. Having lost all eight league matches this season in which they conceded first, Augsburg rewrote the script as Han-Noah Massengo finished off a slick passing move with composure, completing the turnaround and stunning the home supporters.
Bayern surged forward in desperate search of an equaliser, but their efforts proved fruitless. In the dying seconds, Olise — who now boasts four goals and seven assists in his last five league outings — struck the crossbar with a powerful long-range attempt.
An unusually quiet performance from Harry Kane meant Bayern were unable to deliver the multi-goal response that has characterized much of their campaign.
Despite the upset, Bayern remain comfortably atop the Bundesliga standings, holding an 11-point lead over second-placed Borussia Dortmund, though they have played one game more.
For Augsburg, the dramatic victory lifted them to 13th on the table and placed them four points clear of the relegation play-off zone.
