Afrobeat legend Femi Kuti has weighed in on the ongoing debate comparing his late father, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, to modern Afrobeats star Wizkid, describing such comparisons as unnecessary and misplaced.

Femi made the remarks during an interview on Arise News, where he emphasized that Wizkid holds a personal place in his life and should not be set against his father’s legacy.

According to him, Fela occupies a unique space in history and should never be measured against any other musician.

“Fela is our father and belongs in a category of his own,” Femi said. “We honour him and hold him in the highest regard. Wizkid is like a son to me, and Seun is my brother. That comparison should never have happened.”

The Afrobeat musician used the opportunity to call on Nigerians—particularly the younger generation—to shift attention away from divisive arguments and focus on the more pressing task of building the nation.

“We should be proud that Nigeria is gaining global recognition at the Grammys,” he noted. “That’s good for Africa and good for our country. But issues like tribalism and terrorism are what truly deserve our attention.”

Femi warned that Nigeria’s future could be at risk if young people fail to take responsibility and demand accountability from leaders.

“If the younger generation doesn’t take up the challenge and insist on good governance, the country will face serious consequences,” he said. “Fela spoke out and is no longer here. Nearly 29 years later, we are still confronting the same issues.”

He concluded with a reflective look at his own musical journey, underscoring the persistent social problems facing the country.

“I’ve spent over four decades in music, and about 90 percent of my songs address political issues,” Femi said. “How long will we keep discussing corruption, kidnapping, and poverty? When will Nigeria finally unite to truly build a nation?”
