Wizkid Is Like a Son to Me – Femi Kuti Explains Why Fela Should Not Be Compared to Anyone

Afrobeat icon Femi Kuti has addressed comparisons between his late father, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, and contemporary Afrobeats superstar Wizkid, describing such parallels as unnecessary and misguided.

Speaking in an interview with Arise News, Femi emphasized the unique place Fela occupies in music history and underscored the personal bond he feels with Wizkid, whom he regards almost like family.

“Fela is our father and belongs in a category of his own. We honour him and hold him in the highest regard. Wizkid is like a son to me, and Seun is my brother. That comparison should never have happened,” he said.

Femi used the conversation to appeal to Nigerians, particularly the youth, to focus on more significant challenges facing the nation rather than engaging in debates that create unnecessary divisions.

“We should be proud that Nigeria is gaining global recognition at the Grammys. That’s good for Africa and good for our country. But issues like tribalism and terrorism are what truly deserve our attention,” he noted.

The Afrobeat musician warned that the country’s future hinges on the younger generation stepping up to demand accountability and good governance.

“If the younger generation doesn’t take up the challenge and insist on good governance, the country will face serious consequences. Fela spoke out and is no longer here. Nearly 29 years later, we are still confronting the same issues,” Femi said.

Reflecting on his own career, Femi highlighted the socially conscious nature of his music, noting that the majority of his songs address political and societal concerns.

“I’ve spent over four decades in music, and about 90 percent of my songs address political issues. How long will we keep discussing corruption, kidnapping, and poverty? When will Nigeria finally unite to truly build a nation?”
