Real Madrid are reportedly closing in on the signing of Manchester United youngster JJ Gabriel after reaching a verbal agreement with the 16-year-old forward and his representatives ahead of a possible January transfer.

Gabriel remains registered with Manchester United but has not returned to the club since September. Instead, the highly rated teenager has been training independently in Spain while considering his options for the next stage of his career.

According to BBC Sport, Real Madrid have agreed personal terms with Gabriel and his representatives. However, formal negotiations between the Spanish giants and Manchester United have yet to begin, meaning a transfer is not yet complete.

Real Madrid Step Up Interest in Manchester United’s JJ Gabriel

Real Madrid are reportedly confident of completing a move for Gabriel during the January transfer window.

The teenager has attracted interest from several major European clubs, including Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, after establishing himself as one of the most promising young talents in English football.

His potential move to Spain could be made easier by his European Union passport, which is expected to simplify his move to a club outside England.

Despite the reported agreement with Real Madrid, Manchester United remain Gabriel’s registered club. The two sides would still need to address the transfer arrangements before any move could be finalised.

Manchester United would also be entitled to compensation if the forward leaves, although the payment would reportedly be lower if he joins a club outside the Premier League.

JJ Gabriel’s Rise at Manchester United

Gabriel attracted widespread attention after impressing during Manchester United’s pre-season tour, where he featured against Atletico Madrid.

The youngster was also in line to become the club’s youngest-ever debutant during their Carabao Cup fixture against Brighton in September.

His performances at youth level have further strengthened his reputation. Gabriel scored a hat-trick on his UEFA Youth League debut and was named Premier League Under-18 Player of the Season in 2025, despite being just 14 during the campaign.

His development has attracted considerable praise, with a Manchester United source previously describing him as:

“The best 15-year-old in Europe”

Former Manchester United interim manager Darren Fletcher also expressed confidence in the teenager’s potential, saying:

“The world is his oyster.”

These comments underline the high expectations surrounding Gabriel as he considers the next stage of his football career.

Michael Carrick Addresses JJ Gabriel’s Situation

Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick has also spoken about the attention surrounding the teenager following the club’s Carabao Cup defeat to Brighton.

Carrick stressed that the club must approach Gabriel’s situation carefully, particularly because of his age and the responsibility involved in protecting young players.

He said:

“We’ve got to be really careful about the whole situation,”

The United head coach further explained the importance of looking after the youngster’s welfare, well-being and exposure as he continues his development.

Carrick added:

“He’s a young boy. From a club point of view, looking after our younger players, their welfare, their well-being, and their exposure, we’ve got to be really conscious of that in this situation.”

His comments highlight the importance of managing the expectations and attention surrounding one of the club’s most highly rated young prospects.

What Happens Next in the JJ Gabriel Transfer Situation?

Although Real Madrid are reportedly confident of signing Gabriel in January, the absence of formal negotiations with Manchester United means several steps remain before a transfer can be completed.

The reported agreement with the player and his representatives represents progress for the Spanish club, but it does not amount to an agreement between the two clubs.

Manchester United’s compensation entitlement and Gabriel’s final decision will also be important factors in determining how the situation develops.

For now, Real Madrid remain strongly linked with the teenager, while Manchester United’s position and any potential negotiations will be closely watched as the January transfer window approaches.

Until the clubs reach an agreement and an official announcement is made, Gabriel’s proposed move to Real Madrid remains a developing transfer story rather than a completed deal.
