The House of Representatives has reassured Nigerians of its determination to deliver a comprehensive and credible Electoral Reform Bill aimed at deepening democratic governance in the country.

The assurance was given by the House Spokesman, Akintunde Rotimi, who represents Ekiti North Federal Constituency I, during the commissioning of three constituency projects in Ikole Local Government Area of Ekiti State on Saturday.

The projects inaugurated include the construction of two roads in Isaba and Oke-Ayedun, as well as a newly completed staff quarters at Odo-Oro High School, Odo-Oro Ekiti.

Rotimi explained that the projects were executed based on the specific needs identified by residents of the constituency, stressing that lawmakers deliberately engage constituents in determining project priorities.

According to him, members of the House of Representatives ensure that constituency projects reflect the genuine needs of the people by allowing communities to actively participate in the decision-making process.

Addressing concerns surrounding delays in finalising the Electoral Reform Bill, Rotimi disclosed that both chambers of the National Assembly are currently harmonising their versions of the proposed legislation, following its passage by the House in December.

He stated that the bill is designed to enhance transparency, credibility, and efficiency within Nigeria’s electoral system, while also correcting gaps exposed during the 2023 general elections.

Rotimi noted that the reform process has been inclusive and consultative, explaining that the proposed changes are based on extensive input from a wide range of stakeholders.

He said the Joint Committees of the House and Senate on Electoral Reforms have held several meetings, retreats, and consultations involving community leaders, civil society organisations, and other interest groups.

The lawmaker added that the harmonised version of the bill would soon be concluded and passed, reiterating that free and fair elections remain the foundation of democratic governance.

He emphasised that Nigerians must be able to vote without intimidation and be confident that their votes truly count, describing this as a fundamental pillar of democracy at all levels of government.

Lawmaker Lists Legislative Contributions

Speaking further, Rotimi revealed that he has sponsored more than 40 bills since joining the House of Representatives.

He listed some of the proposed legislations to include bills addressing sexual harassment in educational institutions, independent candidacy, and whistle-blower protection.

ADC Urges Swift Passage of Electoral Bill

Meanwhile, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has urged the Senate to fast-track the passage of the Electoral Bill 2025, warning that prolonged delays could jeopardise electoral reforms ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, accused the APC-led Senate of intentionally slowing down the legislative process.

He cautioned that any further delay could pose a serious threat to the credibility of the 2027 elections and undermine public confidence in the electoral system.

Rotimi, however, called on Nigerians to remain patient and confident in the legislative process, assuring that the final Electoral Reform Bill would meet public expectations and address shortcomings observed in previous elections.
