Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman has successfully completed his medical in Spain, putting him on the brink of completing a €40 million move from Atalanta to Atletico Madrid.
The 28-year-old arrived in Spain on Sunday to undergo medical tests while Atalanta were engaged in their Serie A fixture against Como.
Atalanta and Atletico Madrid reached a full agreement on Saturday, with the transfer structured as a €35 million guaranteed fee plus €5 million in performance-related bonuses.
According to La Repubblica, Lookman has agreed to a four-year contract with Atletico worth €7 million per season, representing a salary increase of over 300 percent compared to the £2.13 million he earned annually during his time in Italy.
The Nigerian international had long been expected to depart Bergamo, with Fenerbahce also pushing hard for his signature before Atletico matched Atalanta’s valuation.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Atletico met the €40 million bid previously submitted by the Turkish giants, allowing talks to progress rapidly toward completion.
“Fenerbahce have not yet agreed on payment terms and bank guarantees. Atletico are ready. The salary proposal to Lookman from Atletico has also been improved,” Romano stated.
The deal follows the collapse of negotiations between Atalanta and Fenerbahce on Friday night, despite the Turkish club’s willingness to commit significant funds to secure the forward.
Lookman departs Atalanta after three and a half seasons, during which he scored 55 goals in 137 appearances across all competitions.
One of the defining moments of his Atalanta career came in the 2024 Europa League final, where he produced a historic hat-trick against Bayer Leverkusen, delivering the club’s first-ever major European trophy.
Crowned African Player of the Year in 2024, Lookman began his professional career at Charlton Athletic, making his senior debut in 2015, before moving to Everton two years later. Although he scored on his Premier League debut, he struggled for consistency following his £11 million transfer.
A loan move to RB Leipzig in early 2018 reignited his form and earned him a permanent switch to the Bundesliga club in July 2019 for £22.5 million. However, his first full season in Germany was challenging, limited to just one Bundesliga start in a campaign disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Lookman later returned to England on loan spells with Fulham and Leicester City before joining Atalanta, where his career truly flourished and he established himself as one of Europe’s most dangerous attacking players.
