Ademola Lookman is on the verge of finalizing a high-profile move to Atletico Madrid after successfully passing his medical examinations in Spain, clearing one of the final hurdles in his proposed €40 million transfer from Atalanta.
The Super Eagles attacker travelled to Spain on Sunday for the required tests while his current club, Atalanta, were simultaneously involved in a Serie A fixture against Como.
Both clubs had already reached a comprehensive agreement a day earlier, structuring the transfer as a €35 million fixed fee with an additional €5 million tied to performance-related incentives.
Reports from La Repubblica indicate that the 28-year-old has accepted a four-year contract with the Spanish side valued at €7 million per season. The deal represents a dramatic pay rise, exceeding three times the annual earnings he received during his spell in Italy.
Lookman’s departure from Bergamo had been anticipated for some time, with Fenerbahçe previously making strong efforts to secure his services before Atletico Madrid stepped in to match Atalanta’s valuation.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano confirmed that the Spanish club equaled the €40 million offer earlier submitted by the Turkish outfit, which accelerated negotiations toward completion.
Romano explained that Fenerbahçe were yet to finalize payment structures and bank guarantees, whereas Atletico were prepared to proceed immediately and had also improved their salary package for the Nigerian international.
The agreement came shortly after talks between Atalanta and Fenerbahçe collapsed on Friday night, despite the Turkish club’s readiness to invest heavily in the deal.
Lookman leaves Atalanta following three and a half productive seasons in which he recorded 55 goals across 137 appearances in all competitions.
A standout highlight of his time in Italy was the 2024 Europa League final, where he delivered a memorable hat-trick against Bayer Leverkusen to secure Atalanta’s first major European title.
Named African Player of the Year in 2024, Lookman began his senior career at Charlton Athletic in 2015 before earning a move to Everton two years later. Although he scored on his Premier League debut, consistency proved difficult after his £11 million transfer.
His form improved during a loan stint with RB Leipzig in early 2018, which led to a permanent move to the German side in July 2019 for £22.5 million. However, his first full campaign there was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic and limited him to just one Bundesliga start.
Subsequent loan spells at Fulham and Leicester City followed before his transfer to Atalanta, where he ultimately rediscovered top form and developed into one of Europe’s most threatening attacking talents.
