Household energy expenses in Nigeria saw a notable decline in December 2025, as petrol and cooking gas prices fell both on a month-on-month and year-on-year basis, signaling relief for consumers nationwide, according to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

Figures from the statistics agency show that Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly used for cooking, and Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), known as petrol, became more affordable compared to December 2024. Modest reductions were also recorded compared to the previous month, reflecting gradual easing of energy costs.

While most states and geopolitical zones reported lower prices, the NBS cautioned that costs still vary significantly across locations, reflecting local market dynamics.

5kg LPG Cylinder Sees Over 25% Annual Price Drop

The average retail price for a 5kg LPG cylinder refill fell by 1.20% month-on-month, decreasing from ₦5,425.78 in November 2025 to ₦5,360.43 in December 2025. Compared to the same month in 2024, the price recorded a 25.31% year-on-year decline, down from ₦7,177.27.

State-level data highlighted Kaduna as having the highest average refill cost at ₦5,838.66, followed closely by Jigawa (₦5,825.09) and Osun (₦5,777.80). Katsina reported the lowest price, averaging ₦4,855.80.

For the larger 12.5kg LPG cylinder, the average refill price dropped 0.74% from ₦13,538.79 in November 2025 to ₦13,438.90 in December 2025. The year-on-year decrease stood at 22.20%, down from ₦17,274.16 in December 2024. Among states, Abia recorded the highest refill cost at ₦14,489.96, followed by Osun (₦14,444.50) and Delta (₦14,393.17).

Petrol Prices Also Record Decline

The average retail price of petrol also fell nationwide. In December 2025, Premium Motor Spirit averaged ₦1,048.63, representing an 11.81% drop from ₦1,189.12 in December 2024. On a monthly basis, petrol prices declined 1.20% from ₦1,061.35 in November 2025.

At the state level, Kogi State recorded the highest average petrol price at ₦1,104.45, while Oyo State had the lowest at ₦996.55. Regionally, the North East emerged as the most expensive zone for petrol purchases, whereas the South West offered the most affordable prices nationwide.

The NBS report underscores a gradual easing of household energy costs, offering some financial relief to Nigerian consumers amid ongoing economic pressures.
