Boko Haram Suspects Launch Early Morning Attack on Geidam Community
Suspected Boko Haram insurgents have carried out a predawn attack on Geidam in Geidam Local Government Area of Yobe State, leaving several vehicles destroyed and valuable goods worth millions of naira reduced to ashes.
Naija economic news today report that the assault reportedly occurred around 4:30 a.m. on Friday, when many residents were still asleep, allowing the attackers to move through parts of the town before security forces could respond.
Official Vehicles and Market Trucks Set on Fire
Residents said the insurgents first targeted the Geidam Local Government Secretariat, where they allegedly set fire to two official vehicles belonging to the council, including a Toyota Hilux and a Sharon bus.
After leaving the secretariat, the attackers reportedly moved toward an area where trucks were parked following the weekly Geidam market.
One of the affected vehicles was said to be carrying merchandise belonging to traders who had concluded business at the market and planned to travel at daybreak. The truck, together with its cargo, was completely destroyed by fire.
Millions of Naira Lost in Market Goods
Eyewitnesses disclosed that another articulated truck parked within the market premises was also torched during the raid.
The destruction increased the number of vehicles damaged in the incident to four, while traders reportedly suffered heavy financial losses after goods valued at millions of naira were consumed by the flames.
According to Gossip News Now, residents stated that the attackers did not cart away any property, choosing instead to burn the vehicles and their contents before leaving the area.
Residents Notice Change in Insurgents’ Tactics
Some community members observed that the attackers appeared to have adopted a different operational strategy compared to previous raids.
According to residents, the insurgents reportedly left their motorcycles outside the town before proceeding on foot into Geidam, a move believed to have been intended to reduce noise and avoid attracting the attention of security personnel.
Witnesses also claimed the attackers moved directly toward their intended targets, suggesting they had prior knowledge of the locations they intended to attack.
No Casualties Reported During the Incident
Despite the destruction caused by the attack, residents said there were no reported deaths or injuries.
However, many described the incident as another reminder of the persistent security challenges facing communities in parts of Yobe State, particularly those located near areas affected by insurgent activities.
Appeal for Improved Security Presence
Following the attack, residents urged the Federal Government, the Yobe State Government, and security agencies to reinforce security operations within the area.
They called for additional personnel, improved equipment and stronger operational support to help security forces respond more effectively to insurgent threats and prevent future attacks.
Police Confirm Incident
The Yobe State Police Command acknowledged that the attack took place.
Police spokesperson SP Dungus Abdulkarim confirmed the incident but explained that operational responsibility for security in Geidam rests with the military, directing further enquiries to the appropriate military authorities.
