Portugal manager Jorge Jesus has explained why Cristiano Ronaldo remained an unused substitute during the team’s 2-1 UEFA Nations League victory over Norway on Sunday.

Although Ronaldo was fit and available for selection, Jesus initially considered bringing the Portugal captain into the match before changing his plans as the game developed.

Jesus Explains Ronaldo’s Unused Substitute Role

Ronaldo, 41, was named among the substitutes, with Gonçalo Ramos starting in attack for Portugal.

Jesus said he had initially been considering Ronaldo for a second-half appearance but ultimately decided that the circumstances of the match did not make it the right moment to introduce him.

“I was thinking of Cristiano to come in… but then the game dictates other things,” Jesus said, as reported by Fabrizio Romano on 𝕏 on September 28.

The Portugal manager made clear that Ronaldo’s absence from the game was not related to a physical problem.

“I felt it wasn’t the right time to put him in the game. There are still two more games, but it wasn’t to protect him physically. He was ready,” Jesus said.

Gonçalo Ramos’ Performance Changed The Plan

Jesus’ decision was also influenced by the performance of Gonçalo Ramos, who started in Ronaldo’s place.

Ramos scored the winning goal as Portugal secured a 2-1 victory over Norway. He also had another effort ruled out during the match.

The Portugal manager revealed that he had spoken with Ronaldo before the game and that the original plan was for the forward to feature for the final 30 minutes.

However, the way the match unfolded meant Jesus reconsidered that plan.

Portugal eventually used all five permitted substitutions, bringing on Vitinha, Rafael Leão, Rúben Neves, Francisco Trincão and Bernardo Silva.

Ronaldo was not among them.

Ronaldo Was Ready To Play

The decision therefore centred on the match situation rather than Ronaldo’s fitness.

Jesus specifically stated that Ronaldo was physically ready to play, while explaining that the circumstances on the pitch led him to keep the veteran forward on the bench.

That distinction is significant because Ronaldo had been included in the matchday squad and had been expected to have a role after discussions with the manager before kick-off.

Instead, Jesus chose to maintain the changes he had made as Portugal pursued the result.

Portugal Keep Winning As Ronaldo Waits For His Return

Portugal’s victory over Norway gave the team two wins from two matches in the UEFA Nations League and kept them at the top of their group.

For Ronaldo, the match represented an unusual situation as he watched the entire game from the substitutes’ bench despite being fit and available.

Jesus has not closed the door on Ronaldo returning to the starting XI in Portugal’s next fixture.

The manager has indicated that the captain could start against Denmark, giving Ronaldo an opportunity to return to the pitch after his unused substitute appearance against Norway.
