Fresh Division Emerges Within Kwara PDP Ahead of 2027 Elections
The internal struggle within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State has taken a new turn following the decision of Hassan Oladimeji to publicly sever his political relationship with former Senate President Bukola Saraki.
The development adds another layer of uncertainty to the opposition party, which has been battling factional disagreements and leadership disputes in recent months.
Oladimeji Aligns Fully With Turaki-Led PDP Faction
Speaking on the growing divisions within the party, Hassan Oladimeji confirmed that he now operates exclusively under the faction associated with Kabiru Turaki.
The politician, who is recognized as the governorship candidate by the Turaki-led wing of the PDP, explained that he is no longer affiliated with the camp linked to Bukola Saraki and Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike.
His declaration came shortly after news emerged of his suspension by party officials in Magaji Ngeri Ward of Ilorin West Local Government Area.
Suspension Rejected by PDP Governorship Aspirant
Reacting to the disciplinary action, Oladimeji dismissed the suspension and questioned the authority of those who initiated it.
According to him, individuals operating within a separate faction of the PDP cannot legitimately impose sanctions on a member who no longer belongs to their political structure.
He maintained that his current position within the party’s alternative leadership arrangement places him outside the jurisdiction of the group that announced the suspension.
End of a Long Political Alliance
One of the most significant aspects of the unfolding crisis is Oladimeji’s decision to part ways politically with Bukola Saraki, a figure he acknowledged had played a major role in his political journey for over two decades.
Although he expressed appreciation for their long-standing relationship, he made it clear that their political paths have now diverged.
The governorship hopeful argued that the political realities within Kwara PDP have created distinct camps with separate leadership structures, making it impossible for one individual to simultaneously lead both sides of the divide.
APC Allegations Dismissed
Naija daily news updates confirm that amid speculation surrounding his recent actions, Hassan Oladimeji denied claims that he is working in the interest of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
He insisted that his political activities remain within the PDP framework and stated that suggestions of collaboration with the APC are inaccurate.
At the same time, he noted that politics often involves changing alliances and negotiations, but emphasized that he has not crossed over to the ruling party.
Reconciliation Still Possible, Says Oladimeji
Despite the ongoing conflict, Oladimeji expressed optimism that peace could eventually return to the party.
He suggested that many of the current challenges stem from missed opportunities for dialogue and engagement among party stakeholders.
According to him, political disagreements are normal in democratic organizations, but successful resolution depends on leaders being willing to sit together and address their differences before tensions escalate.
Why the Suspension Was Issued
Gossip News Now top political stories today reports that the leadership of Magaji Ngeri Ward had earlier announced a one-month suspension against Hassan Oladimeji over allegations of misconduct and activities considered detrimental to party interests.
Party officials stated that disciplinary proceedings were initiated after complaints were received against him.
The ward executives further claimed that he failed to honour invitations issued by a disciplinary committee, a development they interpreted as a refusal to defend himself against the allegations.
As a result, the local party leadership proceeded with the suspension from party activities pending further developments.
Rival Governorship Candidates Deepen Party Tensions
The crisis has also produced competing governorship candidates within the Kwara PDP.
While the faction loyal to Kabiru Turaki recognizes Hassan Oladimeji as its candidate, the camp associated with Bukola Saraki has thrown its support behind Engr. Bolakale Kawu.
The existence of parallel candidates highlights the depth of the division and raises questions about the party’s ability to present a united front ahead of future electoral contests.
Analysis: What This Means for Kwara Politics
The latest disagreement underscores the challenges facing the PDP in Kwara State as preparations gradually begin for the 2027 political cycle.
Factional battles, leadership disputes, and competing claims to legitimacy could weaken the party’s position if unresolved. Political observers believe that unless reconciliation efforts gain momentum, the opposition party may struggle to consolidate support across key voting blocs in the state.
For now, the widening gap between the Saraki-aligned and Turaki-aligned factions remains one of the most significant political developments shaping the future of the PDP in Kwara.
