Fresh information has surfaced regarding the death of Mary Habila, a nurse attached to the David Umahi Federal University of Medical Sciences and deployed to the Federal Ministry of Works, as one of her closest colleagues has shared a detailed account of the events leading up to the incident.

The testimony was provided by Anita Baaki, a physiotherapist and friend of the deceased, through a sworn affidavit submitted before the Ebonyi State High Court as part of the ongoing investigation into the case.

Official Assignment Brought Team To Ebonyi

According to Gossip News Now, Anita Baaki explained that she travelled with other ministry personnel from Abuja to Ebonyi State on June 24, 2026, during an official engagement under the supervision of Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi.

She stated that members of the delegation were lodged inside a staff chalet situated within the minister’s country home in Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area.

Baaki emphasized that the accommodation was specifically designated for staff members and official associates and should not be mistaken for the minister’s private residential quarters.

Mary Habila Appeared Normal Before Retiring For The Night

Giving details of the final evening she spent with her colleague, Baaki recalled that Mary Habila returned after visiting a salon and briefly stopped by her room.

The pair reportedly spent time discussing her new hairstyle, sharing light conversations before the nurse excused herself.

In her statement, Baaki explained that Mary mentioned she intended to freshen up and rest after what had been a long day. She noted that their conversation ended on a cheerful note, unaware it would be their last interaction.

Concern Grew After Repeated Calls Went Unanswered

The following morning, Baaki said she became increasingly worried when Mary Habila failed to emerge from her room as expected.

After making several unsuccessful telephone calls without receiving any response, she decided to personally check on her colleague.

Upon arriving, she discovered that the room remained locked from the inside despite repeated knocks on the door.

Staff Forced Entry Into The Room

Unable to establish contact, Baaki alerted a domestic worker, and together they searched nearby areas within the compound in case Mary Habila had stepped out.

When every effort failed to locate her, additional staff members were informed, leading to the decision to force open the locked room.

Inside, Mary Habila was found lying unconscious on the floor close to the entrance.

She was immediately transported to the David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital in an effort to save her life.

Hospital Confirmed She Had Died

Medical personnel at the hospital later confirmed that Mary Habila had already passed away before arrival.

Baaki noted that her affidavit was provided voluntarily to investigators and was intended solely to assist authorities in establishing the full circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.

She stressed that the statement was made without influence, coercion, or external pressure from any individual or institution.

Investigation Continues Into The Circumstances Of Her Death

Authorities are continuing investigations into the death of Mary Habila, with forensic and investigative procedures expected to determine what led to the incident.

The affidavit submitted by Anita Baaki is among the materials being reviewed as investigators work to piece together a comprehensive timeline of events.

Analysis: Witness Testimony Could Be Key To Establishing The Timeline

The detailed account provided by Anita Baaki offers investigators valuable insight into Mary Habila’s final known movements and may help establish a clearer sequence of events before her death.

Although the affidavit does not identify the cause of death, it provides important context that could assist detectives and forensic experts as the investigation progresses. With public interest remaining high, the outcome of medical examinations and police inquiries is expected to be crucial in determining exactly what happened.
