The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has voiced concern over the recent surge of defections from opposition parties to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), suggesting that these moves may be driven more by personal or political interests than by a genuine commitment to good governance.
NNPP National Publicity Secretary Ladipo Johnson made the comments amid widespread party switches in 2025, noting that governors and political figures, particularly those previously elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), have been among the high-profile defectors. Reports have also indicated a possible defection by NNPP Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf.
Several PDP governors have already crossed over to the APC, including Peter Mbah of Enugu, Douye Diri of Bayelsa, Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom, and Sheriff Oborevwori along with his deputy, Monday Onyeme, from Delta State. Additionally, Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau joined the APC, while Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke moved to the Accord Party.
During an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, Johnson suggested that the motivations behind these mass defections remain unclear and questioned whether they genuinely serve the interests of governance or the country.
“I think each governor knows their own reasons for aligning with the APC or the president,” Johnson said. “Some have left the PDP, but it’s unclear whether this is truly about governance or the welfare of the country. Frankly, it’s a shame and a pity.”
He further emphasized that ultimate authority lies with the electorate and cautioned that political dynamics are fluid ahead of the 2027 elections.
“But at the end of the day, it’s the people who will decide what happens. With 36 states and 36 governors, the situation is not fixed. The elections are coming next year, and anything can change before then,” Johnson added.
