The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has criticised the wave of defections from opposition parties to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the moves as unclear in motivation and not necessarily in the interest of good governance.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, made the remarks amid growing defections in 2025, including governors and political figures who were previously elected on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform. Reports also hinted at a potential defection by NNPP Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf.
Several notable PDP governors have already defected to the APC, including Peter Mbah (Enugu), Douye Diri (Bayelsa), Umo Eno (Akwa Ibom), and Sheriff Oborevwori along with his deputy, Monday Onyeme (Delta). Recently, Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau) joined the APC, while Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke left the PDP for the Accord Party.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, Johnson argued that these mass defections are less about good governance and more about personal or political calculations.
“I think each governor knows their own reasons for aligning with the APC or the president,” Johnson said. “Some have left the PDP, but it’s unclear whether this is truly about governance or the welfare of the country. Frankly, it’s a shame and a pity.”
He added that the ultimate decision rests with the electorate, stressing that the political landscape may still shift as the 2027 elections approach.
“But at the end of the day, it’s the people who will decide what happens. With 36 states and 36 governors, the situation is not fixed. The elections are coming next year, and anything can change before then,” Johnson said.
