‘Not Correct’ — Presidency Refutes AI Claims on Tinubu-Kagame Meeting Image

Nigeria’s Presidency has firmly rejected suggestions circulating online that a widely shared photograph showing Bola Ahmed Tinubu alongside Paul Kagame was artificially created. The clarification followed intense speculation on social media, where some users questioned whether the image truly captured a real-life interaction between the two leaders.

The debate began after the picture, reportedly taken during their time in Paris, gained traction online. Attention intensified when observers noticed a visible connection to Grok, an artificial intelligence chatbot developed by xAI. This detail fueled suspicions that advanced technology may have been used to fabricate the scene rather than document an actual diplomatic engagement.

Initial public awareness of the meeting was driven by a post from the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who shared details of Tinubu’s international engagements. However, as skepticism grew, the Presidency moved quickly to correct what it described as misleading assumptions.

Providing further explanation, presidential media aide Temitope Ajayi emphasized that the image genuinely captured the leaders together and was not digitally manufactured. He explained that while the photo had undergone enhancement, this process was strictly limited to improving visual clarity rather than generating or altering its content.

Ajayi noted that the meeting between the Nigerian and Rwandan presidents included a lunch engagement, followed by a separate dinner gathering hosted by Emmanuel Macron later the same day. According to him, the photograph was originally taken with a mobile device, which resulted in lower resolution, prompting the photographer to refine the image using enhancement tools.

He also cautioned against drawing premature conclusions about the use of artificial intelligence in official media, stressing that improving image quality does not equate to creating fake visuals. The Presidency maintained that the photograph accurately reflects real diplomatic interactions and urged the public to verify information carefully before accepting or spreading unconfirmed claims.
