Human Rights Concerns Raised Over Alleged Prolonged Detention
Human rights campaigner and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has called for the immediate release of a group of Nigerians he claims have been held in detention for more than four years without facing any formal charges.
The activist voiced his concerns through a statement shared on his verified social media account, describing the situation as a serious breach of constitutional rights and due process.
Detention Linked to Nnamdi Kanu Court Appearance
According to Sowore, the individuals were reportedly arrested in Lokoja, Kogi State, while travelling to Abuja in 2021.
He alleged that their only objective was to attend a court proceeding involving Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The activist argued that observing a public court process should not be grounds for arrest or prolonged incarceration.
List of Individuals Mentioned
The detainees identified by Sowore include Wisdom Ezike, Kenneth Ojima, Chinedu Nwoba, Igwe Sampson, David Ogbonnaya, Aja Joseph, Barrister Awoke, Chinoso Oyibe, Eze Joseph, Okezie Fortune, and two drivers, one of whom was named as Ikechukwu.
He maintained that the majority of those being held are natives of Ebonyi State.
Claims of Four Years Without Trial
One of the central issues raised by Omoyele Sowore is the allegation that the detainees have remained in custody since 2021 without being formally arraigned before a competent court.
He described the situation as unacceptable in a democratic society, stressing that every citizen is entitled to fair hearing and legal representation within a reasonable timeframe.
Gossip News Now reports that the activist believes the continued detention of the individuals raises important questions about accountability and respect for fundamental human rights.
Call for Compensation and Accountability
Beyond demanding their release, Sowore urged authorities to provide compensation to the affected individuals if investigations confirm they were unlawfully detained.
He also insisted that any officials found responsible for violating the rights of the detainees should face appropriate disciplinary and legal consequences.
According to him, accountability is necessary to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
Criticism of Wawa Barracks Facility
The activist also directed criticism toward the detention facility where the individuals are allegedly being held.
He described Wawa Barracks in Niger State as a location that has repeatedly attracted allegations of human rights abuses, calling for a review of its operations.
In his view, facilities associated with claims of unlawful detention should be subjected to greater public scrutiny and oversight.
Growing Debate Over Human Rights and Security Operations
The allegations have added to ongoing conversations surrounding security operations, civil liberties, and the rights of individuals arrested in connection with politically sensitive matters.
Observers note that balancing national security concerns with constitutional protections remains one of the most debated issues in Nigeria’s justice system.
Analysis: Why The Allegations Matter
If the claims made by Omoyele Sowore are verified, the case could reignite national discussions about prolonged detention, access to justice, and the protection of civil rights.
Human rights advocates have consistently argued that due process should remain a cornerstone of democratic governance, regardless of the nature of any investigation.
As attention turns toward the allegations, many Nigerians will be watching closely to see whether relevant authorities respond to the claims and clarify the legal status of the individuals named in the statement.
