President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a major overhaul of the leadership structure at the Nigeria Police Academy located in Wudil, Kano State, as part of efforts to strengthen security training and institutional governance.

The newly reconstituted council, made up of 16 members, will now be chaired by Ibrahim Gaidam, the Minister of Police Affairs. The decision reflects the administration’s focus on reinforcing oversight within key security institutions.

According to Bayo Onanuga, who communicated the development, the council brings together a mix of top security officials and representatives from critical government sectors. Among those included are the Inspector-General of Police, members from key federal ministries, and the leadership of the Police Service Commission.

Gossip News Now reports that the composition also ensures national balance, with individuals selected from each of Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. The representatives include Babagana Zannah Adam, Emmanuel Torkuma Manger, Maigari Abati Dikko, Dubem A. Obaze, Ajibogere Toyin, and Udom Udo Ekpoudom, reflecting a spread across North-East, North-Central, North-West, South-East, South-West, and South-South respectively.

Structure and Internal Roles

Within the academy’s framework, certain officials will serve automatically as part of the council. These include the Commandant, the Provost, and the Deputy Inspector-General of Police responsible for training. Administrative coordination will be handled by the Registrar, who takes on the role of secretary to the council.

New Campus and Funding Boost

In a related move, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the establishment of an additional Police Academy campus in Erinja, located in Ogun State. The expansion is expected to increase training capacity and improve access to police education across the country.

To support the take-off of the new institution, the federal government has also approved a substantial funding package amounting to ₦15 billion, aimed at infrastructure development and operational readiness.

Analysis: Strengthening Security Institutions

The restructuring of the Police Academy council, alongside the creation of a new campus, signals a broader effort to modernize Nigeria’s security architecture. By combining experienced security personnel with representatives from key ministries, the government appears to be prioritizing both professionalism and administrative efficiency.

However, the success of these initiatives will depend on effective implementation and sustained funding. While structural changes are important, the real impact will be measured by improvements in training standards and overall policing outcomes.

If properly executed, these reforms could enhance the capacity of law enforcement agencies and contribute to addressing Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.
