Fresh insights have emerged from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its founding chairman, Ralph Nwosu, clarified the party’s position regarding the zoning of its presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 elections. Contrary to growing political pressure, the party has not committed to any regional arrangement.

Speaking during a recent engagement, Ralph Nwosu explained that the ADC is deliberately maintaining a flexible and inclusive framework that gives aspirants from all parts of the country equal footing. Rather than restrict the race, the party appears focused on openness as a guiding principle.

In fact, the issue surfaced prominently during coalition negotiations, where voices—particularly from the North—pushed arguments rooted in Nigeria’s political timeline since 1999. Reflecting on those engagements, Nwosu acknowledged that such viewpoints introduced a perspective he had not initially considered. He indicated that the fallback plan would always favor internal democracy. In situations where agreement proves difficult, the party would proceed with primaries, ensuring that the eventual candidate emerges through a transparent electoral process.

Interestingly, several influential political figures have reportedly expressed readiness to align with whoever emerges as the ADC’s candidate. Among those mentioned are Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rotimi Amaechi, all of whom are seen as major players in Nigeria’s political landscape.

Nwosu also hinted that Rabiu Kwankwaso may soon publicly affirm a similar stance, reinforcing the idea of unity regardless of individual ambitions. This development, if realized, could strengthen the party’s cohesion heading into the election cycle.

For the ADC leadership, credibility appears to be at the heart of its strategy. Nwosu emphasized that the party’s commitment to openness influenced key structural decisions, including leadership choices.
